153 on board, seems to be a lot of survivors. Phew.

all credit to the pilots by the sound of it, landing a plane with no engines must be difficult beyond comprehension but to land a plane with no engines on water.

Credit to crew though, shows they're trained well and deserve the wages for having the ability to deal with these situations although you hope they're never called for.

Unbelievable to hear the captain walked the plane TWICE after putting it down to make sure everyone was off. 1000 hats off to him, and a massive pat on the back to EVERYONE who rushed to the scene to get 153 on to dry land !
Fantastic story, and the sort of heard warming story the country and world need right now. Not all doom and gloom.

Lucky they didn't scramble some F-15s and shoot it down as soon as it went off course
I bet some of the people on the ground were thinking Uh-oh here we go again.
Fantastic job by the aircrew

I like how not one of those people on the wing bothered to fit the life jacket that they take so long to tell you about at the start of every flight! May as well not bother!

Not all flights/airlines carry them, depends if the routes go over actual bodies of water or not.

As said all credit to the crew and let's not forget the boat crews too![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Just one thing though, you have to wonder about religious folk sometimes...
'I thank God for putting me on that flight, I could've had a later flight but the Lord put me on that one and I thank him for it and for keeping me alive'.
Yeah, this God fella is soooo good he puts you on a flight that ends in a river and a hospital stay, GREAT!
Sorry, back on topic!

A US Airways spokesman said the passengers should receive their luggage within 48 hours, adding: "It's not as if the plane has been anywhere near Heathrow. It's just partially submerged in the Hudson river."

I think in fairness, the early pics, of when the plane had just splashed down, and everyone was on the wings, people were more interested in getting out before putting them on. Looks like they did the right thing after.
I remember people were wearing them from the almost amuzing sight of the people who had been rescued now on dry land being smothered by their inflated life jackets.

Bird strikes, especially those with the larger birds such as geese etc are a very worrying problem at any time believe me. The incident in the Hudson River was extremely well dealt with in every respect including of course the rescue services and the entire crew of the aircraft.
The first and most important bit was done by the pilots. To lose the engines with a heavy aircraft is pretty disastrous in the first place and to sort it all out and to get the aircraft into position to ditch in the river and then to make a fully successful touchdown is deserving of the highest praise. I have heard various prats sayting that the captain does not deserve to be a hero because such things are practised in the simulater etc. This is not strictly true though if course crash landing procedures are practised from the point of view of saving the passengers, but not the flying bit of a ditching. That is a one off when your turn comes to do one!
The captain did an outstanding job to land the aircraft on the river in such a way that the aircraft remained floating and did not tunnel under the water or cartwheel which is the major fear in such a case. This of course enabled the passengers to leave the aircraft through the overwing emergency exits and thus save them from possible drowning etc.
An episode like this so soon after takeoff with a heavy aircraft needed quick clear thinking in order to get the aircraft in a position for a safe ditching. He was lucky the river was there, but he took full advantage of the situation and saved them all.
I suggest that they ask for the Congressional Medal to be returned by the professional liar and hand it to the Captain instead.

Don't think they could have had a more experienced pilot in that situation. Apart from being ex US Navy pilot flying F4's and then 29 years service with USA he is also a qualified glider pilot which no doubt helped him a hell of a lot with the angle of approach in a 50 tonne tin can a couple of thousand feet up in the air with no power. He glided it for 6 minutes to reach the landing point having decided the original airport from where he took off from, and another local airport in his flight path were not viable.
All in all an amazing piece of flying to have such an outcome.
