A HDMI DVD player will most likely upscale meaning you get better picture quality.

Also, no matter what any salesman says, don't spend any more than £5-£10 on a HDMI cable (depending on length of course). The £50 ones in a lot of stores will not give you a better picture quality!!

[QUOTE=SlimJ_2005;8432219]A HDMI DVD player will most likely upscale meaning you get better picture quality.QUOTE]

But the TV will already be upscaling won't it? So a new dvd player might not make a world of difference. I'm sure the HDMI connection will make a difference but will it turn a bad picture into a fantastic one?

Maybe your setup is still not right; I've got a really cheap dvd player hooked up to my viera via RGB scart, and the picture is very good.

Did you upgrade from a decent CRT?

Maybe your DVD doesnt upscale and therefore doesnt take advantage of the HD aspect.

Do you have Sky HD? A PS3 or Xbox360?

If you dont have any HD hardware you wont really see the benefits.

The major benefit with HDMI is that it is a digital signal. Your TV is a digital display, so by removing the digital to analogue conversion before transmitting the signal via component/scart/composite or whatever analogue cable you were using, then removing the need for the panel to then convert it back to digital before scaling it to fit the displays native resolution is where the major quality benefit lies. Whether the DVD player does the scaling, or the TV does it simply depends on whether the player gives you the option to select a scaled or native output and which device you feel is doing the best job of it. Pay from £40 or so for a cheap upscaling HDMI player, and as said above, pay no more than a fiver for an HDMI cable.

In terms of the 360, the HDMI will transform the picture quality. Just remember to adjust the settings in the menu system to 1080p.

to sum it up, the better the input signal the better the output signal. Whilst upscaling dvd players can improve the signal, they aren't as good as a true hi def signal

I see and hear no difference between HDMI, composite and component in my setup, and I sussed it all out too. It's a scam, like the megapixel scam in the dSLR space.

The is a massive difference between composite and RGB, let alone component...

I agree, I recently tidied up some wiring going to my av amp and realised I has my xbox360 connected via composite. dont get me wrong the picture quality was still good, however when I sorted it to component, it was just sharper and more vivid

It's also worth mentioning that neither composite nor component carry audio, so you are unlikely to 'hear' any difference. If you are saying that you can't hear a difference between analogue phono stereo and digital (Dolby/DTS) 5.1/6.1/7.1/7.2/9.1/9.2/11.2 or whatever then you really should just buy a 14" Matsugongitronic portable and squint at it through you beer bottle glasses whilst enjoying the tinitus whistle in your head. Quality AV equipment is wasted on you

Like the fella the other week complaining that his new widescreen telly wasnt displaying DVDs as 'proper widescreen'. They were Panavision films with black bars mastered on to take them up to 1.79:1 !

Think you should be made to take some kind of test before you buy into this type of technology just so that you know how to use it to it's full potential

The muppets in Comet/Currys/etc. don't help with all the misinformation they give out
