Jeremy Clarkson Complains About War Coverage
Interesting read
MoD News - Jeremy Clarkson Complains About War Coverage
I agree with most of his comments. However, maybe I'm a little biassed as I am still serving...

It's quite a pointed finger he's waving. Whilst it is true that a large proportion of the general public don't know what is going on in Afghanistan, I still fear that a large proportion don't actually care. If they did it would be news worthy and sell papers, so it would be covered.
Yes the MoD might be able to do more, but as with all public departments they have dwindling funding and have to prioritise. Personally, I would rather see the money continue to be spent on kit that will save my life when I go back out in a few months time rather than some jumped up press agency who can spin a good story.
Unfortunately, for something to be really news-worthy it has to be tragic and I don't want my wife seeing that while I'm away. On the positive side, look at the way the MoD managed the news of the drawdown in Iraq and the moving of the Kijaki Dam, as well as the series Warzones etc.

He has a point. All we hear about are more and more troops getting killed, but we don't know anything about what is being achieved.
I think it would be a good idea to know a lot more about what is going on. If we are not told what is happening how can we care about it? I for one do care. I want to know a lot more about what we are doing and why we are doing it.
Maybe they are not telling us as there are no real true goals that can be achieved? I really don't know.

thanks
of course most of the info that is presented there is quite one sided. Not necessarily a bad thing, but its hard to sift through it to know the real picture without any other sources. That is what a good journalist does, they know enough about what is going on to present a nice balanced picture.....well....at least that is what they are meant to do

I agree largely with what Clarkson said. I keep on remembering that the Russian forces were not able to subjugate Afghanistan for all the time they were there and had to withdraw. What on earth are our forces meant to be achieving in the most dangerous part of the country and with next to no help from the other Eu forces in Nato. Their forces are not allowed to be put in danger!
It is as though our authorities volunteer us for all the dirty jobs to please all the other countries, and even then they don't give our forces the proper backing that they deserve.

The public like wars, and they like viewing them from a long distance, between people they don't associate with, watching missiles blow up buildings, without seeing any associated human involvement. Seeing a British squaddie take an enemy apart with a heavy machine gun makes the sweet little people sitting watching BBC News a little queasy, but they're happy to watch JDAMS smash compounds because they can't see all the unidentifiable body parts that it leaves.

Are you surprised Les? The Government always dicks the Armed Forces when another public service proves to be utterly inept in this country as well - fire strike, foot & mouth..... I'm expecting us to take over responsibility for social services soon

No I am not in the least surprised.

As usual Mr C is partially correct but he is barking upthe wrong tree.
The MOD don't run the stories, the press do. The media people have all but given up feeding lines into the press as no one bothers to print it. You can lead a horse to water..............etc
Maybe Mr C should turn his guns on his employers and ask why News Corp don't tell the good news rather than berate the MOD who have given up beating their heads against a brick wall.
