yoza,

Around a 3 hour drive from home. Road conditions were pretty hairy at times

Thanks to all for the comments.

Great pics!

The weather in Japan at this time of the year is mad full stop. I spend quite a bit of time working out there, these are a few pics from this time last year, over 4 consecutive days ...

Appologies for the somewhat 'touristy' nature of 1 or 2 of them.

In the hills near Toyama on the west side of the main island...drifts were up to about 10 foot.

A day later, and only a couple of hours by train to Nagoya on the pacific coast...bright sunshine...

And 2 days later, an absolute downpour in Hiroshima....

Hi P1mark,
Thanks for the pics
I've lived in Japan for more than 6 years now and I agree with the 'mad weather' quote.
The first picture I posted...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...a/DSC_0550.jpg
was only available having climbed a wall of snow, probably 7 to 8 feet high, beside the road.

I've used the following pic a few times in the past, but it depicts how much snow we get in the area of Japan where I live.

That's me standing at roof level against a carport of a house just up the road from mine.
Amazingly, life goes on as normal, with slight delays, despite the winter weather.
In summer it often exceeds 40 degs C too!!!!

Regards.

***Edit****
Bloody TV has just gone off again due to snow build-up on the dish

Another problem is the weight of snow and the amount of effort it takes to remove it from buildings.
It's not unusual for the army to be brought in to help.
This guy, however, is toiling away to save his roof from collapse..

Hi Jamie,
Thank you.

What you can see, I think, are avalanche break fences.
In this case steelwork has been driven into the hillside to impede and break-up falling snow from impacting the village.

If you get that amount of snow every year why don't they have steeper pitched roofs? Seems bizarre.

Yes, I've got to agree. Thought the same too.
Not sure why, although I'm at a loss for a lot of what the Japanese do or don't do
Suffice to say, this guy will have to do this job several times each winter, if the snow is wet, as he has a house in a very high snowfall area. However, most of the winter season the snow is extremely dry and powdery and blows around in the wind like smoke. It doesn't build up on the roofs if it's dry snow.
My house sheds it's snow in very noisy avalanches every week or so when wet snow falls.
Sometimes scares the cr@pulla out of me
