I still haven't seen that much discounting at main dealers for new cars. Second hand ones, yes...

You would think they would show some common sense and sell th estockpiles off at a very good rate creating some money to keep them all going...it's not such a hard concept surely.

Trouble is, the car manufacturers sell them off cheap and then everyone his nice shiny, cheap new cars that they wont replace for at least 2 years, probably longer and wont to buy another one for a while, also potentially people are being prudent or dont have any money, the credit addicts cant get the credit as easily or at all, I have seen a lot of money go off ISA's and shares so if cars were cheap and investments up then yes, sell a few quids worth and get a new car but they arent and to be honest the one I have still works.
I do agree though, it might be just a case of getting cash in, any cash rather than these cars taking root.

Whatever the downside of selling them off cheap, I'd have thought the last thing any manufacturer would want is a stockpile of a model that's actually been discontinued and replaced... this pic looks like Ford Ka's to me:

But if they sell off new cars at a discount then all the second hand cars in stock at the dealers will go down in value, which might be a bigger hit overall.

Most people in this country are scared to haggle, scared to ask and worried about driving the salesman down until he squeals like a pig ....... therefore the price they 'think' it is is the List Price and these same people get all excited when they 'manage' to get a set of mats thrown in!!

its also very important to stay in buisness too otherwise there is no brand!, if they did a store like sale say for eg 'for 2 months only every car every model 50% off while stocks last'. Also how often do these cars move/get started/washed? if you leave a car long enough without care they generally start to deteriorate.

There are some deals out there. The Quentin Willson prog the other week had a Mazda dealer doing buy one get one free. If you took a new 4x4 off them they'd give you a new Mazda2 as well.

Remember when the last recession was on. Ford did a good deal. Buy a Sapphire Cosworth, get a Fiesta free.
Was talking to a Ford dealer not so long back about this, and he said that because they couldn't shift the Cosworth, due to recession and insurance premiums, they were knocking £7k off the price. But in order not to devalue all their cars, and second hand value's, it was buy a Cosworth get a £7k Fiesta free.

I'm in the US at the moment (Las Vegas) and every dealer & manufacturer is in full discount mode. There are all kinds of incentives on offer from big discounts (biggest I've seen was $17K off a Lexus or something similar) to other schemes such as if you buy a car now and lose your job in the next year you can just give the car back to the dealer with no penalty. There is the whiff of desperation over here.
