Question Night vision equipment

After some advice please folks.

What with all the animal activity we have in the garden at night (deer, foxes, badgers, etc.) I quite fancy getting some night vision equipment to have a look at the nightly goings on.

Not wanting to spend a fortune, so can anyone recommend a decent set of binoculars or monocular? It appears that upto £200 might be necessary?

I had a quick Goggle search and obviously have never heard of most of the retailers, but I have heard of Uttings Night Vision - and they appear to have a deal on some Bushnell kit.

My limited knowledge from doing a quick surf seems to point to Gen1 (or 1+??) with Infra Red illumination being the sort of thing I'd be looking at?

Thanks,
Steve

Or do a search for Yukon monocular. You are right in saying Gen 1 will be what you will be dealing with, as there is a large price hike to Gen 2. I picked up a waterproof Yukon NVMT2 3x42 on eBay for £85 a couple of years ago. It was sold as and is new, but there is a black speck on the inside of the lens so I guess the reality is that it is a 'second' and couldn't be sold in a real shop. Works fine though and the point I'm making is that you needn't spend a lot (RRP is over £200).

Cheap first gen nightvision stuff is usually rubbish. You can get the same benefit (but way improved) by removing the IR filter off a cheap used Mini-DV camera. With that you can zoom and record too.....

Thanks guys.

Interesting thoughts about the video camera. Never had one so had no idea they had NV-enabled versions!

Best have a look around to see what's out there - agree that it would be cool to video the badgers as they dig up the flippin lawn!

LOL - considering the age of my neighbours, one side is late 60s others are in their 70s, I doubt you do really unless you have some weird fetish best kept to yourself and Wayne Rooney!

Cool

I had a Sony Handycam from 10 years ago with NV and infra-red lamp, it was fooking superb!

Real total darkness video and good quality too. The lamp illuminated for a surprising distance too.

Get an old webcam and remove the ir filter from it. Now youve got an instant nightvison webcam, of course its now useless for day use now.

Infra Red Webcam
Making a Night-Vision Webcam
Night Vision Camera - Video

Thats what I done and its hooked up to Webcam Surveyor to keep an eye over my car at night.
