Default What comes after jobseeker's allowance?

My eldest was made redundant after Christmas. He's a qualified welder/plater. He's just had a letter from the social saying he can have JSA until 17th July, depite having paid stamps since he was 16, six and a half years ago.

So why can he only have JSA for 6 months?

And what, if anything, will he get, should he still need it, after that?

As above you get contributions based (non means tested) benefit for 6 months, after that you get income based (means tested) benefit thereafter.

The face that he is currently on contributions based would suggest that he will not qualify in some way for the income based one. Income based Job Seekers is better as it can open up other benefits for you. Income based looks at the income of the household, so if he is living at home and others work then he is stuffed.

I am no expert, but my circumstances changed and when I had to claim Job Seekers they tried to put me on income first, as this would have opened up other things that I needed. I could not qualify for that as I lived with other members of my family, so had to go onto contributions based.....it was a while back though....and lets face it the advisers there don't always know best!

Isn't that when you go onto disability?

Well, if he is disabled he should be getting that already....

But after Job Seekers the last line of support is Income Support. Its a passport benefit (lets you get others like housing benefit), and is means tested. You have to have nothing basically to get it.

I was looking at what benefits could be claimed while browsing the job centre site, it links to Dwp for further info, talk about baboozle you into not claiming. It really is stupid, I looked into a tax credits, it said i'd got a valid claim, and I could claim all of £0.00 Wow!

Or maybe he is lucky to be part of a FAMILY. Families look after each other and aren't dependent on the state handouts that are meant to prevent absolute poverty and hardship maybe? Or is it just a lottery game to be played, as cleverly and cunningly as possible

If you are ever Icum based = you never had a job or ever want one.

JSA = they will offer you a 'wage' to look for one, it is in the UK interests.

I was going to write here much better things) Don't drink kids.

From my understanding, after 6 months, they will give you an interview which is supposed to enable them to target specific job searches to you and make sure that you've acually applied for jobs on the previous six months.

After 6 month they should start to offer free training courses.

Afer one year, they might pay towards your mortgage.

Ive been made redundant,

you go onto Contribution JSA for six months, sign on every 2 weeks
then Income JSA after six months, you get a checkup at 6 months. Where you have to sign on every week for six weeks.
After 39 weeks you can get get your mortgage paid at interest only {MI12 form}. You can also get your council tax reduced but that depends on what you have in the bank.

On training side of things, you can get courses soon as your on the JSA, but you get more offered to you after 6 months. You also get an extra £10 a week while you attend.

Being made redundant is no fecking laugh, I was on a £35000 a year job, now I only get £60 a week to feed myself and my kids {weekend dad}. Keeping yourself busy and motivated is the key, Im busy attending college and helping out at my kids school.

For all the smart arsed posters, suggesting kicks up the backside etc,

knock it off !

If you've ever been redundant, you'd know just how demoralising it gets as

time goes on!

Ive been there 4 times, and it sucks

even being very well qualified, if there are no jobs in your field, or that

utilise your skills et, the chances of sliding into another job although

possibly easy, wont pay anyhere near what you previuously earnt.

Now i know lots on here would say take the job, as its a job,

however if it doesn't cover the bills, you end up worse off, as any insurance

policys you had, cease when your start work!!

Dont count on any help from the JC, once you go past the 12 week

window, they go target based, and they only care about getting you "any"

job, regardless of suitability etc!!!

Oh and if he goes for interviews make sure they pay for it! they have a

nasty habit of sending off paperwork for job interview expenses, and then

forgetting to pay you for it!

Hope he finds something

I was a printer based in Fort William working a 10 colour press. The print trade is a bad way at the moment all the companies around me have gone to the wall. ie Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness.
The unemployment in my home town is high as its tourist town with seasonal work in hotels and so on.
Im busy getting background checks done at the moment, as im trying to get into the Police force.

I will put my hand and say I was guilty at slagging off the unemployed, but now that Ive became one. Ive had to eat a lot of humble pie and my views have changed towards them.

Yes there is a lot of scum that free load of the system and have no intention to work ever, but there is a lot of good honest people out there unemployed out of none of their fault. I feel like trash everytime I have to walk in to sign on, Im trying hard to better myself by taking every course I can get to give me a better chance to get a new job and to get food and clothes for my kids.

I just hope all the people that are on their high horses dont come crashing down like I did. I thought I was secure in my job, been at the same place for 22 years. Then the place went burst and all I got was £3960 from the government as a redundancy package.

Must admit I've always tended to look at the unemployed in a bad light, but sounds like there's a few out there who are keeping their chins up and doing all they can to get some paid work, so good luck to you guys

I think you will find many many like that due to the current financial circumstances - not to do with shirkers or career unemployed real decent people who want to contribute and get on on their own two feet but find themselves without an income.
There people do not know the system and what they are entitled to in the same way as the chav grapevine makes sure that the habitual unemployed get all they can and more!

Don't take this the wrong way but surely living within ones means allows us to save a bit for events like this ? You certainly have my sympathy though as its a worry for anyone right now, as is your employer going bankrupt so you get no redundancy.

I lost my first job after 18 months when I was a teenager and it gutted me and I was unable to claim benefits. I went from working for a major blue chip It company to taking any work I could end ended up doing night shifts making tin cans. I some respects I loved it , it made me fitter and really appreciate what I have now.

I think a positive outlook and can do attitude makes a person stand out from the crowd when looking for work.

Hope it works out

JSA Income Based should be payable for as long as he is unemployed after his JSA Conts based finishes, the exception to this is if he is living with a partner and they work 24 hours a week or more - in that case the partner's wages are supposed to support both.

The minimum gov rate for redundancy is one week (final salary rate) for each year of service?

On £35K a year with 22 years service you should have received about £14K

I was recently made redundant, less time but same wage and that was what I received.

Something is very wrong if all you got was £4K.

All I got was £330 x 12 weeks

I and the rest of the company was told its capped at that. A max £330 a week even though I was around double that.

Oh, and a mate was recently made redundant from Siemens, 20 years service, crappy wage compared to mine but an enhanced redundancy package (normal for decent firms) that gives him £53K.

I dont know if its clean cut as that, there is a lot going on with the union and the courts at the moment.
Half a million is missing from the accounts, we are busy fighting for 3 months payment notice. Its just a fecking mess at the moment.

Any way its starting to get a bit off topic.
