Would recommend Hotel Royal - it's right in the centre on La Rambla's and has safe underground parking (although with a bit of an exhaust-bashing entry if you're taking a sports car!). Nice clean rooms, and obviously great location.

+1 for the Arts Hotel in Barcelona. Quality - It's right on the front, a stones throw from the beach and Las Ramplas(sp) I had a lovely room overlooking the marina. Very very nice indeed - But then again it was on company expenses. Couldn't have justified it (probably) if it was coming out of my hard earned corn.

And the rest, where were you drinking?!
Same with any of the popular tourist destinations like Nice in France as well - 7-8 euros for a beer is pretty much the norm unfortunately.
Current exchange rate makes it pretty damn expensive now, and I'm not going on a European road-trip this summer as a result

I've always booked an apartment and cooked the local produce myself, it's one of the highlights of living in Barcelona imo. Well worth it, especially if you're living near Las Ramblas as it has one of the best markets in Europe. Depends what you want though, how long you are going for and if you're a lazy **** who cant or wont cook.
The wine is always cheap and v good, so I can never complain about being ripped off by the **** they usually pass off as lager
