Testing out the Police
Friend of mine had his house broken into recently and his laptop stolen.
The laptop has logmein installed and the thieves have used it.. meaning he now has the IP address of the scum ..
Most people know where I work and obviously we have the means the trace this to an address.. but due to DPA we are not able to provide the police with this information.
So he has told the police it is there waiting for them to contact the ISP officially .. and now we wait ..

Can I ask you why it can take a while? Is it due to red tape or the actual service provider? Or the fact that the police are overstretched?
Why can't the officer who responded go back to the station and contact them / send the fax?
This is not a police bashing question by the way, i just want to understand how it works

It's faxed off and then you wait...... And sometimes wait......
Plus, the burglary will be on a list along with lots of others.
Theo officer taking the report won't be the one investigating it, btw.

Keep up the pressure on the cops and bug them until they do something. In my experience they love the constant calls
Just a side note, I have this installed on many of my clients machines and on mine and my girlfriends laptops . Not quite sure if there is a similar version for windows but it is a great peace of mind

Hi,
My name is Ken Westin and I am the founder and CTO of GadgetTrak ( Mobile Security, Laptop Theft & Remote Data Delete Software ) , I just noticed in our log files that we were getting some traffic from here and I thought I would check it out, as I am a Scooby owner!!! 2007 WRX wagon :-) We actually just sponsored the Oregon Trail Rally here in Portland, Oregon, probably the most fun I have ever had, we even got to ride with a few of the pro drivers and met Ken Block and Travis Pastrana.
Anyway, if you have questions about our software let me know, I am more than happy to assist. Also here is a 25% off coupon code, just enter it in the promo field when you checkout: scoobynet09

Could you tell me how, in regards to this..
GadgetTrak® MacTrak™ utilizes advanced wi-fi positioning technology ( 10-20 meters of accuracy) to locate your stolen Mac. In addtion GadgetTrak uses the built-in iSight camera to capture images of thieves and integrates directly with your Flickr account.
How do you get lawful rights to my data via my ISP?
More to the point, business laptops have there wireless cards changed periodically in the public sector, hence a new MAC address, how do you address this, or indeed the thief changing the hard drive.
Thanks

Actually from the police POV its RIPA and not DPA so much, which means that about 300 sheets of paper now have to be filled in to recover this information.
RIPA means that the customer is supposedly better protected from the supposed nosey or bent front-office clerk faxing in a DPA form, and now the request has to go through about 3 chains of command (signatures and authorising signatures) before it will even get send to VM. In reality, from a submitting officer's POV on a genuine case, its a pain in the *** as it takes so long to do.
Then there's the bottleneck at the SPOC (single point of contact that the ISP's insist on) and the police liaison at the ISP.

Hi Ken,
Could you tell me how, in regards to this..
If I had stolen a laptop, say my own laptop with inverted camera, how you would locate me, if I were using it wireless on my or a company network.
How do you get lawful rights to my data via my ISP?
