BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Jason 'sorry' for Pakistani joke
You don't have to be racist to be branded racist anymore. The mere mention of anyone non-white is enough.

I think it's a funny joke and made me laugh so label me with Sir David Jason. If someone from abroad made jokes about English names I couldn't give a flying toss so why do people have to be so overly sensitive to what is a harmless play on words?
As an example of how over PC people are being there wasn't even one complaint made about what he said FFS. More a case of over sensationalism by a radio station no one has ever heard of just to get some free press

Sounds like it's more a case of the station treading on eggshells just in case the PC idiots in the public decide to pipe up, along with the rest of the media.
You're right though, it's been totally oversensationalised by the reporting of it and not really racist at all, imho.

< insert deity here so as not to offend people > on a bike! I did read the story this morning and thought, David Jason, a racist, yeah, pull the other one.
If there are any Pakistani people on SN, could they possibly comment if they are at all offended at the joke?
I could understand if David had used the "mahatma coat" phrase to describe all Indian/Pakistani people, for example "oh I don't have a problem with those mahatma coat people", that could be seen as racist.
As it states, there were no complaints from outside the station, so it has to be some oversensitive type from within the station that complained about it.
I'm sure some people still think Warren Mitchell really is bigoted racist.

Del Boy, Boyce, Rodney et al must at one time or another taken one at every nation, nationality that is represented over here, not forgetting the specials where they went to the US of A, Spain, Holland and Frog land and gave them a 'bashing' as well
Nasty vicious racists NO!
Ggood humoured, well written, witty, self depracating lines/scripts delivered by some masters of comedy timing - YES!
TBH the caracters took the mick out of the English more than anybody else, with good humour and no malice.
People need to understand the difference...

Find it strange that tell a joke about French,English, Irish or Scots and its fine but if their skin is darker then you are a racists, This country is really becoming sh*t, I used to be proud of being English !What happened to common sense ? 1984 or what ?

The council should stand up, grow a backbone and lay down the law of common sense and decency!

I dont think Mahatma is a traditional Pakistani name, its I think its more Indian, as in Gandhi, anyway, how could anyone be offended by that, it is, as he said a play on words, the name Mahatma, a typical Asian name sounds like "My Hat", stick Coat on the end and you have a rather innocent joke, but mention the word Pakistani you have to apologise, not to Pakistanis who in my experience can take a joke like anyone else, as long as is it isnt designed to cause upset which that patently isnt, the key phrase for me in the article was "Despite no complaints being made".
This country needs a shake up, people need to stop being offended on someone elses behalf, it wasnt unaceptable, maybe it was Sir Jason trying to include people, seeing as Pakistanis being involved in jokes has been off limits since 1982, I expect they are ready for some banter, the idea being its inclusive, sharing a laugh.
