Default Anyone here climbed mount snowdon?

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend which route to take. I'm looking for the gentlest route as the missus is **** scared of heights and wants to take the train up, which kind of defeats the point of going up there for me
Also how long does the ascent and descent take? I don't want to be one of those muppets stuck up there in the dark

I suggest you walk up Moel Famau one weekend then Snowdon another.

My 4 year old has walked up Moel Famau, but I did tell him there was a sweetshop at the top.

Easiest, most gentle route from Llanberis. Start not far from the train station, walking on the road and then a gentle climb for 7km to a slightly steeper section, under the train track and then a steep path following the train track to the summit. Should take about 3 hours to the summit and 2 hours back for someone with a bit of cadiovascular fitness.

Quickest route from Pen-y-pas youth hostel, you start almost a third of the way up, route finding is obvious, but if you're not used to hill walking and want to avoid any perception of height, best to go via Llanberis.

Warning - People do die on this mountain, mainly due to slips and falls in tricky conditions or going off-route -

Best to find a nice day in Spring / Summer. Enjoy the climb.

Llanberis path, up from the train station, just off down the road to the left.
Gentle walk up in good weather is about 2.5 - 3 hours, back down about 2

Amazing place to be, hoping to take the dogs up again this summer.

Went up last summer and ran down in the pouring rain, after a long wet windy climb.

Even on the Llanberis path there are some challenging points now, so take your time, and make sure you take some food and definatly drink

Pyg track is fairly easy going.

I climbed the Watkin path and came down the Pyg track a few years ago. I could hardly walk the next day - but then I was on the **** and 2 stone overweight

Other tips in all seriousness, check the weather before setting out. 5-6 hour on a mountain is a long time and up there a lot can change. Being there in high winds or/and rain is not pleasent.

Take good layers with you, some thing waterproofs in your bag. And most of all, some good shoes/ boots.
Some of the surfaces really do need good grip and ankle support.

Not sure if the summit shelter and shop is finished yet, but there was NOTHING there last year. So arriving at the top after a 3 hour climb in high winds and driving rain, with soaked dogs....... Was a good reason to run back down. Took an hour lol

The easiest path as said before is from Llanberis (surprisingly called "the Llanberis path") and basically follows the railway line. Make sure you have a good pair of boots as the track wasnt in the best of conditions in December when I was there last. Should take you about 3 hours if your of average fitness and average pace with a few drink stops. There are quicker routes but they are more physically challenging as the path is steeper.

also make sure you have something waterproof as when it looks like a fine day at llanberis can be torrential rain at the top! or even the other way round.

also make sure you take a camera, so you can mark the moment for posterity.

this might help: Walking up Mount Snowdon

and have a look at the ordinance survey site for path routes or buy/borrow a map.

Ferk paying those prices, the pyg track looks interesting but it'll probably be best to stick to the Llanberis Path .

Now for the 420 mile drive

Them train prices are a bit steep 23.00 quid return ticket for an adult, and they charge an extra £3.50 if book a ticket on the phone.I could probably go from Cardiff to Barmouth for less...

Question is, which is steeper, the climb or the prices.

Dude, ifs its a long drive for you, make the most of it, may I recommend Electric Mountain and Betwys Coed. Angel Falls is also lovely.
Its a superb drive thru the mountains though. So well worth the drive there. Definatly take a camera.

Bear in mind that the train is only going half way up at the moment whilst they rebuild the cafe at the top; or at least it still was at the end of last year when I was there.

I prefer the Watkins path route from the other side personally.

Is the summit station still not finished! Lol
When I was up last summer they said it was meant to have been done by then but it was delayed by poor weather

LOL could just imagine that paying your money to go on the train, and then get booted off half way up the mountain .I bet it's about 5 quid for a cup of tea and a flap jack when the cafe is built..

The summit station was shut and the track in pieces when I was up there at New Year.

Take a look at my album for some photos from the Pyg Track btw.

As said above, the Llanberis track is the easiest but it is a long one. We walked UP the Pyg Track but due to the seriously dangerous sections we had to traverse we came back down the Llanberis path and got the bus back to Pen y Pas.

A couple of things to note - the car park at Pen y Pas fills up VERY quickly. We got there before 8am (-8!!!!) and it was half full then!

What most people do is park at the bottom of the pass and walk up to the start of the Pyg Trail or Miners trail and THEN set off. This adds about a mile of uphill walking.

Incidentally, the Miners Trails looks great at first as it's bascially flat over Llyn Llyddaw and it stays flat right until you get to the long steep uphill climb, and that ain't easy.

The Pyg Track has a 'harder' start but you are a 1/3 of the way up and miss a nasty little climb.

Of course if you are feeling adventerous you could always do the Horseshoe which starts along the Pyg Trail

Btw - it's worth it for the views on a Sunny day - really spectacular.

and just to freak people out 'cos it seriously did my nut in - there were people cycling UP the Llanberis path when we were coming down.

Lol same here, people coming down on their bikes after a fresh snow fall.
Falling off every 100 yards but loving it.

Amazing place though, love being up there.
Travelodge is Bangor is a good base to go from if you are spending a few days there. Or one of the more local b&b's. But the Travelodge is on the *** which is a cool place to head everywhere from
