BBC have just confirmed 8 bodies have been found with 8 missing. I think it's pretty safe to assume that all 16 are dead.

Wrong word to use in the title there fella, ditching is a controlled landing on water.

It would be so nice to go a week without an Aviation related incident.

this is what i do for a living, considering the amount of flights to and from oil platforms on a daily level helicopter ditchings/crashes are almost unheard of but this is actually three in the last 6 weeks there was a chopper went down of the coast of canada returning from an oil platform with 18 lost, deffo gets me wondering is it worth it in the long run

The Puma, isn;t a small chopper either!

the Navy used to use puma,s

there a rapid old beast..

A bloke i worked with once had a role as support engineer who used to travel round the world fixing lifeboats..

He did all the qualys, including the dunk tank at yeovil, only to be killed on his

first ever trip, when the chopper taking him to the rig went down.

The guy who took over from him was, understandably a bit nervous on his first trip

these choppers are nothing short of work horses, they fly in almost any weather conditions (except fog), ive been in some of these things in 70 MPH + winds before and felt safe (to an extent) and do umpteen trips offshore every day to different installations, think of them as sky taxi`s if you like, most of the pilots are EX RAF personel and are trained to the highest standard possible, the choppers them selfs go through rigorous maintenance at regular intervals due to HSE rules for transportation of personel, to hear of three of these things going down in such a short space of time in unheard of

Such tragic news my thoughts go out to all concerned
It was a bit of a shock when i heard it was KCA Deutag personnel onboard as i know someone who works for them.

Cant understand why they aint found them all because i thought you all had locator beacons in your survival suits?

Maybe time to adopt the Norwegian survival suits which are about twice as big but more effective than the UK standard equipment.

I'm due to do my offshore survival course soon.....

Sad, sad news. Condolences to all involved. Puma's are pretty rugged and reliable beasts, so something pretty catastrophic must have happened today. Looks completely different from the one near Shetland the other week.

Tragic thing to happen. I think those choppers are used very intensively on that job. They must get a lot of hard wear. Sounds as though it was a pretty bad failure since the flotation bags were not able to cope with the entry to the sea.

exactly, they were said to have interfered with some things on board the choppers, a bit like a mobile phone can do on certain electrical things etc so were removed from service, i was actually offshore when this happened and had to hand mine in onboard the rig
