Which terminal??. It makes a difference. In general allow about 90 mins from A3 roadworks to Terminal 5 at that time in the morning.

if you hit the m25 before 6.30am it is usually quite clear -- even, as you are, travelling on the busiest section

a little tip for you on that section -- in heavy traffic you can gain an extra 4/5 miles by continually dropping off on the (very long) slip roads and rejoining

Did the very same thing myself to T2 this morning; about half an hour from Guildford - but it was 4am! Seriously 8am allow plenty of time, A3 to M4 is a nightmare.

Well the gods were on my side

I got to Guildford just after 7 which is a bit later than I had planned. But M25 was fine and got to Heathrow 25 mins later. My boy, James, had checked in by 8.15 so all in good time thank goodness.

Only worry was a motorway notice saying M25 CLOSED AHEAD. JCT16 - JCT17. I had no idea if those junctions were before or after the Heathrow turn off so I just hoped!!

I don't do much dawn driving these days but it was interesting driving through Sussex up to Guldford with the regular early bird commuters. Without exception every vehicle went at a steady 40 - 45 throughout the 30 mph villages and just under 60 through the 40 mph sections.

Wouldn't want to do it every day though
