Ganglion removal
Anyone had one removed from their wrist, its on the part where your thumb ends/wrist begins. ?
If so, what kind of time off work did you need ?
i do alot of computer work/manual handling lifting base units monitors/driving to sites etc so have been advised i should take 3 weeks off by colleagues etc, i had to fight to get the Op done via the NHS which has taken months so dont want to rush it all and get back to work to **** up my wrist, you only get 2 after all
Never had anytime off work for an injury/operation in 13 yrs of working so its all a new area for me,feel a bit of a letch having time off but as i say,its all well n good going back to work, but the company wont care if i do permanant damage, they`ll jusy say i shouldnt of gone back to work etc
anyhoo,anyone ?
cheers

Your consultant should be able to give you an idea of when you can start work and write to your GP who can give you an appropriate sick note.. back to work in 3 or 4 days if the hand isn't being used. About 2-3 weeks if the hand is being used If I can remember back to my training days.
It depends on what they have to do to remove it.
Shaun (not a doctor though)

Fairly similar. A friend of mine at work had one, it was pretty big as well. She got it removed, but I can't remember how long she was off, a few weeks I think.
Unfortunately, IIRC, it came back.
I had a few weeks off when I got my cyst removed from behind my middle finger, as per doctors advice, but I use my hands all the time at work, and there were no light duties I could be put on, so I could return sooner.

Ya big Jessie.
Guy at work had one of these - went to the doc - had it removed - back at work next day - sure he just had it removed with a syringe or something.
Doc reckoned he could have just whacked it with a book and it would have sorted itsef out.
Maybe it was something else - but looked similair (but bigger that the piccie you show).
HTH.
ps We all volunteered our book whacking service but he declined.
pps Looks like it's coming back - so we're going to whack it this time

Pah,having it syringed is the jessies way out !!
im having it cut out, removed from the tendons.
having it syringed is just reducing whats there and hoping the cavity as such doesnt gather more liquid.
removal via Op is 85% succesful they say, syringe method is about 55% and whacking ti with book, as i tried, 25% successful

Consider taking at least 3 weeks of work. The missus had this done a few months ago she had the gangling on back of the wrist and she got a carpal tunnel operation at the same time, all at the same time. She was sore for about 2 weeks. her hand is getting back to normal now. she's back at work but was of for about 3 weeks.
She's going back in May to get the other carpal tunnel done in the other wrist.
How big is the gangling???

The Docs usually just whack it with a book - it disperses quite easily!!! LOL!!
I had two and accidentally knocked them on walls or summit. After the initial "Ouch, ****!" all was fine.
Surgery is a bit excessive IMHO

The first cyst I had was on my back, it used to ache a bit now and then, but that was it, so I just left it alone (doctors said I could have it removed if I wanted) as it wasn't any real hassle. However, the one that developed behind my finger was causing me some real pain, and movement issues, so surgery (even according to my consultant) was seen as the best option. He believed it was down to where it was mainly, but he also told me that syringing it was not very reliable, and it would most likely come back, just prolonging the inevitable.
I know a cyst and ganglion are different to a point, but being similar, I would imagine the same rules apply, it all comes down to how much hassle it causes the person concerned. It's only fairly minor surgery in the grand scheme of things.

Heres a pic of it,hard to get a good pic as lighting/using my left hand aint a goo combo !
The reason i need it off is because i am forever hitting it and it hurts like hell, when fixing the car it feels as if its gonna explode out my skin and when using my weights etc all i can see is this thing bulging out at me and the ganglion ha ha
also at work i am forever rocking on it as i use the p.c etc and well,it aint meant to be there so want it off

Yeah, the bible was used because it was the only heavy book most houses had back in the day.
Just found a snippet from a doctors site
You must move your fingers regularly. You cannot drive whilst your hand is in the bandage. How soon you can return to work depends on your job. If you can work one handed, you may be able to return to work two or three days after your operation. This also depends on you being able to get to work. If your job is manual you will be unable to work for two to three weeks. You may swim and play most sports once your stitches are out. When you start playing, you will not be able to play for as long as normal and your wrist may ache at the end of a game.

well,in case anyone was wondering or google brings this post up.
saw the consultant.
gotta be knocked out, they have to stop the blood flow to my arm for 25 mins, cut my wrist open around the ganlgion, move the tendons out the way, cut the goo out and then fry the tunnel to stop it forming again, whilst avoiding the main artery in my wrist, its right on it.
sounds fun
3 weeks outa action, thumb in a splint for 10 days solid
no ridin the motorbike for 1 month
cheers

I got one of them on my knackered wrist. About 1cm circle. Doesn't really bother me much to be fair. As for time off, a guestimate would be around 3 weeks, but don't ops like this sometimes take upto 6 weeks for full recouperation. Especially if you're gonna be using your wrists in a high risk RSI environment?
