What's the most powerful handgun?
After just remembering Dirty Harrys famous quote about his 44 magnum, I was wondering what is the most powerful handgun these days? None of these customized things built with bits off riffels, something that could be bought over the counter, so to speak is it the Desert Eagle .50?

The desert Eagle would be a better bet being semi auto and 'manageable'
Great stopping power by both, however some smaller calibre pistols with the right sort of ammunition can do an awful lot of damage to a person.
Most of my pistol shooting has been confined to 9mm, Browning's and 92F Beretta's

I can't access that video on my iPhone, but what Paul has said. I wondered if things had moved on since the desert eagle, as it's must be getting on for over 20 years old?

Paul - same here. Oh and a couple of air pistols too! I liked the Beretta.
Whatever the power, it's not going to be very accurate over about 25 metres away. Except in the movies of course...

As an alternative to the obvious ones above, in the good old days when pistol shooting was still allowed in this country I remember a guy shooting a Casull .454 at the range which was pretty impressive.

I was reading through the link about the .600. I was thinking, well its a bit big. But nothing prepared me for the picture of the man actually holding it. Only then did I gain an appreciation for scale.
I think we have long past the definition for a handgun, and have moved on to a hand cannon

Guys,
everybody knows, the most powerful handgun in the world is the .44 magnum...
"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? "

Are you going to mess with dirty harry

For me, as a long time pistol shooter, these big bespoke guns are not really pistols to me.
If it dont fit in a holster its no a pistol IMHO!
TBH that goes for the .50AE too, thats not a pistol IMHO. I know it *is* but you are never going to carry it as a sidearm!
As far as revolvers go, S&W .500 mag packs one hell of a punch, but its a monser too.
.600 is just mental and it might spit out 1000 grain rounds at some daft velocity but it would be pointless in an actual contact situation.
As a toy would be fun though
For me a .40 Smith, 200 grain round is all I would ever need from a sidearm.

Having shot a .50AE Desert Eagle, I can confirm it is immensely powerful but also immensely difficult to handle, the recoil nearly broke my fecking wrist !! Mind you I never really got on with Desert Eagles anyway, preferred the smaller Jericho. Got to agree that .40S&W is probs the best power/handling trade-off.
The Nitro Express uses nitroglycerine as well as gunpowder in the shells, no wonder its got such a mahoosive muzzle velocity.

When I was in Florida 6 years ago we popped over to a local range and amongst many things we fired a Taurus .454 casull which was apparently the most powerful at the time.
It was a 5 shot revolver as the bullets so large. However it was suprisingly easy to shoot with minimal recoil due to the barrel vents. We only did 10 shots each as it was over a dollar a round lol.
We also fired the Desert Eagle .44 and for such a large gun it was suprisingly easy to use and accurate.
