It is supposed to be a 'good' ending, presumably she goes back to 2009.
And over so quickly as well ... shame. Not like these American series that go on for 24 episodes a series.

Beyond this, I'm sure I read something by Phil Glennister stating that he's going to retire Gene after the third series of ashes to ashes as he does not want to overuse Gene.

What an excellant ending -- either a bizarre coma whilst in a coma or some form of brain damage.
Damn you BBC -- just eight episodes a series and a year wait between each one!

I never caught life on Mars, or Ashes to Ashes series one. Started watching series 2 about 3 episodes in and I was totally hooked. What a fantastic program
The ending... really weird and creepy, and I'm still trying to get my head around the storyline as I can't put the pieces together

cob,
You need to see Life on Mars series 1 and 2. As fun as Ashes to Ashes is it is not a patch on the original.
I would go as far as to say one of the top 5 pieces of TV of all time. A fantastic blend of drama, humour and almost David Lynch type weirdness.
If you enjoy Ashes to Ashes you will love Life on Mars.

I agree, the plot was much better in life on mars but the acting/characters were better IMO in Ashes to Ashes.
Enjoyed them both so far but Life on Mars left me guessing much more - I still haven't figured out the ending

Series 2 of Ashes to Ashes far exceeded my expectations as I did not like series 1 at all. Series 2 was far more like Life on Mars and fantastic. I thought the ending last night meant she was going to have to go back and clear Gene from being accused of shooting/murdering her.
