The launch of space shuttle Endeavour's STS-127 mission to the International Space Station is on hold due to a leak associated with the gaseous hydrogen venting system outside the external fuel tank. The system is used to carry excess hydrogen safely away from the launch pad at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. At 12:26 a.m. EDT Saturday, managers officially scrubbed the launch for at least 96 hours.

The earliest the shuttle could be ready for liftoff is June 17, however there is a range conflict on that date with the scheduled launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.

Mission managers will hold a meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday to discuss the repair options and Endeavour's launch attempt opportunities. A news conference will follow the meeting's conclusion and will air live on NASA Television and the agency Web site.

Snazy - If you do get lucky make sure you get down as close to the launch as you can.

The word Awesome is overused nowadays - But not in the case of Shuttle Launches.

of Course shuttles are only good for straight line acceleration - we'd all have him in the twisties !

We saw Atlantis go up in June 2007.

Think Concorde x 50 and you're about right. 3 miles away and the ground is shaking!

Hydrogen Leak Prevents STS-127 Launch
Wed, 17 Jun 2009 09:03:28 AM GMT

Space shuttle Endeavour's STS-127 launch today was officially scrubbed at 1:55 a.m. EDT when the same type of gaseous hydrogen leak was detected at the Ground Umbilical Carrier Plate, or GUCP. This is the same location where a similar leak resulted in a launch scrub on June 13.

"We're going to step back and figure out what the problem is and go fix it," said Deputy Space Shuttle Program Manager LeRoy Cain during a briefing afterward. "Once we get it fixed and we're confident that we have a solution that's going to work and allow us to go fly safely, then we'll proceed forward."

Teams followed the same repair method as they did for the GUCP leak encountered during the STS-119 countdown. The STS-119 and STS-127 leaks will both be evaluated in order to determine the cause. Data collected during fueling is expected to help the troubleshooting effort.

Endeavour's next launch attempt for its STS-127 mission is targeted for July 11 at 7:39 p.m. EDT.
bugger !!! we'll be home by then, I have plenty of experience with gaseous hydogen emissions so maybe I could give them a hand

Here you go mate. You can view this spot on Google Maps. Bonus is being next to McD's you've food, drink and toilets if you need them!

Drive in to Titusville. Turn left onto Highway 1A. Drive up aways and look for MacDonalds @ 3835 S Washington Ave Titusville, FL 32780. When you see the MacDonalds on your right park up somewhere near and walk up the left hand side of the building.. You end up on the edge of the riverlooking straight across at the Launchpads. (About 3 miles as the crow flies).

I hope you get lucky mate, it truly is an awesome experience and very emotional. Lots of people with tears in their eyes, me included.

I didn't know they were launching them from Yorkshire these days....

Seriously, I'd love to see one. I saw a Saturn V launch back in 1969 when I was a kid. It was Apollo 12, launched in a thunderstorm and struck by lightning, and it was spectacular. Couldn't tell what was thunder and what was the noise from the engines...

The downside was that it was raining hard, so nothing much to see once it reached the clouds after a few seconds.

The trip was free though - I'd won a competition run by the Daily Mirror, so it was an all-expenses-paid trip to Cape Kennedy (as it was called then), Washington and New York. At the Space Center we got to try on spacesuits and stuff. Unforgettable.

Hell yeah I will !!
Im about to text a few mates with decent lenses for a 350D

I loved the tour of Kennedy last time, was great
Seeing the shuttle sitting on the pad was knowing it was not going up while I was there. So close.... yet so far.

Everything at Kennedy is hard to take in when you appreciate what happens there, or is that just me lol

I got to admit the missus has actually taken to watching launches on the net these days, so she might like it.

I got to see it in the flesh about 8 odd year ago. If you think your afterburner exhaust is loud then you'd better think again

Saturn V
Shuttle
.
.
.
Vulcan doing the 'going vertical' thing just above you
English Electric Lightning doing the 'going vertical' thing just above you
Concorde takeoff from near the runway
.
.
.
Scooby exhaust

I realise that the first two may be interchangeable, I'd love to do an A-B comparison but sadly that can never happen. The Vulcan had more bass than the Lightning but the Lightning involved more pain... and neither of them was like God moving the furniture upstairs

10 hours to go.
Will the weather prevent the launch, will I get to see my first launch...

Only time will tell.
News updates show a 60% chance of being postponed at present. Forecast is improving though..

Fingers crossed!

Yup sure am.
We have some seriously hot weather coming in now.So while there will be some good conditions, there will be some big storms too, so lets see.

Weather forecast for tomorrow gives a 60% chance for launch at this time.

7.13pm EDT

So looks like I will just have to spend a day by/in the pool today, watching all the families around us pack up and go home lol byeeeeeeeee

MMT Clears Endeavour for Fueling
Sun, 12 Jul 2009 02:11:39 PM UTC+0100

After the Mission Management Team cleared the lightning event that delayed yesterday's launch attempt, a "GO" was given for external tank fueling. Tanking operations will start at approximately 9:48 a.m. EDT. Liquid Hydrogen “topping” (gaseous Hydrogen vent valve cycling) will begin at about noon. Weather permitting, launch is scheduled for 7:13 p.m. The forecast is 70 percent “go” for liftoff.
