Default To get new windows or not?

Thinking of selling the house soon and it still has the original single glazed windows. I`m guessing new ones will cost about 3k and the only way I can pay is by credit card. So I could potentially be paying a lot of interest on the bill while i`m waiting for the house to sell. Maybe I could just say to a would-be buyer that i`ll knock it off the price of the house, or is that gonna put people off if it isn`t double glazed?

How old is your house? If it's an old one and you put upvc ones in I will personally come round there and stick a sharp pointy stick in your eye!

You are much better off leaving it as it is.

Houses are selling on price at the moment, yours will be £3,000 cheaper than an equivalent with DG.

DG is only worth it if you plan to stay in it for a decade.

Double glazed windows, and infact any major detail that you would notice the first time you look at a house will obviously be important. Although anyone with a bit of common sense would see them as something that could easily be replaced.

You could no doubt fit the new UPVC(or whatever windows you are going for), give the house a good tidy up to get it looking as clean and modern looking as possible, and more than cover the cost of the windows.

But I personally would rather you didn't make any effort so I could save thousands when buying your house.

The house was built in `75 and has wood framed windows. The frames are painted white and are all in excellent condition.

If they're all in good condition, why bother replacing them?

Just thought double glazed windows were the "norm", so i`m trying to gauge how much it could put people off if they`re not fitted. Personally I could do without the hassle and initial outlay of putting them in.

Personally, I hate them with a passion, and they would put me off a place but that's just me. If I were you, I'd leave them as they are and let the new people put them in if they want them.

leave then and let the new owner decide they may not want double glazed windows!!

I am sure the info pack has a section where the current energy performance is recorded and improvement shown they would me mentioned in that I think.

Your selling price will have no impact on the windows it'll be on how much the people want it, and so on.

That, and a new bathroom made me £40,000 three and a half years ago....

The buyer said, happy to scrap the kitchen, but no more wanted doing, taste is a variable.

P.S. She even wanted me to build her a new garage, LOL ( I knocked a grand off.) and it sold in three days !

What, you hate double glazed windows? Or just UPVC ones?

I live in a four floor victorian terrace and when we bought this it had white UPVC windows and doors!!! The rest of the house was a shed so had to spend our money on that first. We will soon be in a position to replace them with wooden sash windows but Im not looking forward to getting quotes.
People think that getting double glazing improves houses.....in most cases (IMO) it looks shocking!

I'm with you Falkster.

They should be banned in anything pre 1960s!. Our place was built in 1903 and we had wooden single-glazed sashes put back in (luckily the original front bay window hadn't been touched). Mr OS's brother did them for us. Most of our neighbours have had upvc put in and they look bloody awful! Totally destroys the character of a house.

I wouldn't do it. You won't get back what you spend, and you may as well let the new buyers decide on whether they WANT them, what type, what style, what colour etc etc.

Remember reading something about the relative values of modernising items on a house and double glazing was a long way down the list after just painting it

I reckon you will lose less money overall to sell it just as it is.

The energy efficiency part of the HIP will show relatively poor economy. If buyers do compare your house with other similar properties with DG, based on the HIP, then you may have (more) trouble selling. If it takes you a year to sell then you will get some benefit from the insulation.

Why not ask an estate agent to give you a valuation, and then ask what that would the value be if the house had DG? If its +£10k then there's your answer

He'll have his work cut out then.

I can understand where you are coming from, but you can't hate them full stop surely? I think they improve the look of a 60s/70's bungalow - most of which have thin wood or aluminium framed windows. There's nothing worse than that...they don't age well at all!

I hate aluminium as well. Oooh.......and hideous upvc front doors (apologies to anyone who has one!)

I did say 'they should be banned in all pre-1960s houses'.
