As a user of both, email on the iphone is "different" yes. Whether its better or worse depends on the user.

From the springboard (the main window with all the applications on it) go here:
Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Then select your email account, scroll dow to the "Outgoing Mail Server" section, do you have anything listed there? if not then you need to configure your outgoing mail server. If you do have something there you'll need to check the outgoing mailserver settings are correct so click on the listing for the outgoing mailserver, it'll list the primary mailserver and other servers, so see if the one you need is listed, if not, scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see an "Add Server..." option, click that and then enter the details for the outgoing mail server.
As for it not getting mail unless you're in the mail app, again in Mail, Contacts and Calendars, look at the "Fetch New Data" option. Make sure it is not set to "Manually" as if it is, then mail will only be fetched when you are in the mail.app. To change the setting select the frequency (I've got mine set to 30 mins) and then click "Advanced" and you'll see your accounts, make sure it says "Fetch" next to them, if it does not, click on them and change it from manually to fectch.
Oh and yes, I do have an iPhone, 3GS 32GB. It is my first iPhone, but not my first Apple product and I have to say I'm rather impressed with it. I'm not at all bothered about the camera not being some billion megapixel unit, and it happily provides what I want, which is a phone, ipod and mobile internet rolled into one, plus with the App Store there are a plethora of apps that could be used to enhance it. I have jailbroken it just for kicks, though I've not yet found any real reasons you'd want to do this. Ok, third-party apps, but I've not found any of much use to me as yet. The unlock of the network does not effect me as there is only one network, ok, two if being pedantic, Rogers and Fido, but Fido is part of Rogers, so I'd call it one. The other networks here are not GSM, so I cannot switch over to them even if I wanted.
I've got a rather nice 6GB/$30 per month data plan, which I think will do me, so far, since the 11th June I've send 5.5MB and received 77.5 MB via 3G, so I'm nowhere near my limit. Perhaps I need to view more videos on it
