Ebay costs

Ebay costs
Just sold some of my shooting stuff on ebay for £360, ebay fee was £38.75 Seems a lot to me, over 10%.
Pointless thread but am surprised at the cost. Am surprised that they continue to get away with it. Suppose when you have cornered a market and they have no competition it is easy to do.

Its just the usual greed isn t it, they have a monopoly so pretty much charge what they want.
Its pretty clever how all the charges are listed on the site somewhere but you dont really know how much they are taking off you unless you look carefully.

I use ebay far less than I used to due to the fee increases. It's just not worth selling a lot of smaller items now.
I only hope google setup an online auction system - and no doubt it would be hugely cheaper to use.

Thing is, what are your other options ? stick it on one of the other auction sites that have no buyers, or put it in your local freeads and only get it seen by a few hundred people... who dont want to buy it anyway.
The fees are quite high now for some things, but for the price you get it seen by loads of people all over the world who are actually looking to buy, and probably end up getting a much better price for the stuff in the end, so its swings and roundabouts.

They take about 15% of the selling price in total with paypal and listing fees. Often makes it far better to look to sell elsewhere like on a forum like this. ebay should only really be used to sell all your old crap that you'd only bin otherwise.

wasn't it ebid that are a competitor to eBay? Think they are meant to be quite good, fees are a lot less. Not sure how you would pay for things, as obviously you'd want to avoid Paypal. No idea what competing online payment options there are, as eBay bans all but Paypal for use on their site.

I'm trying to sell my Blackberry Storm for the second time on ebay. The first winning bidder apparently disappeared off the Earth. Seems no-one will buy off you these days unless you have loads of positive feedback.
I still got charged to re-list the poxy thing. It's cost me £24 so far and I haven't even sold it.
For buying I steer well clear of ebay now. To many scammers. I've been using Amazon for buying all sorts of stuff now and never had any problems whatsover.
