Default MTB Fork upgrade question

One for the MTB ers

I've got a Scott Reflex 20 disk which is a couple of years old now.

Very happy with it, do mostly trails ranging from smooth forest to seriously rutted/tree rooted/rocky, and everything in between.

It came with Rock Shox Dart forks (100mm travel). The forks have been ok, but flex a bit under hard braking and despite being bump/rebound adjustable with lockout are not that absorbent for the rougher surfaces.

If you hit a really big big rit/rock/bump they work, but seem too stiff for the middle gound.

Not looking to spend a fortune (the bike itself wasn't that expensive) but looking for something more robust, yet giving a smoother ride on the rougher surfaces.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Should I be looking at air rather than coil?

I do highly recommend air over coil - smoother, easier to adjust the firmness and lighter. Depends on budget - I'd look at Rockshox Reba Rockshox Reba Race 2009 - RockShox Suspension Forks

Fox Float (I have these - wicked forks) are also very good but pricey.

At the cheaper end, look at Rockshox Toras - coil sprung but very robust and pretty plush - Mrs Matt's bike has these.

Try and buy 2009 or 2008 forks that will be much cheaper - forks haven't moved very quickly technology wise in the last few years.

Don't go overboard in travel or you'll wreck your geometry. 120mm absolute max.

If the steerer on your existing forks is 185mm or less, then these Rebas are a steal from Merlin:

What's the benefit of air over springs other than weight?

Air - plusher, quicker rebound, more adjustable. Ideal for anything from XC to medium all mountain stuff.

Coil - tougher, can be smoother if set up perfectly, generally better for longer travel suspension.
