Plasma opinions please :)
I have read *everything* on the
Panasonic TX-50V10 and LG 60PS8000 and both get excellent reviews in avforums, etc.
What I haven't been able to figure out is, from a 10ft viewing distance and upscaling through a PS3 and suitable av receiver, will the 60" LG be too big for SD DVD movies?
Bear in mind I pretty much only go to the IMAX for the big screen experience, so I *am* looking for a big screen, but is the 60 unwatchably big?
anyone have either of these sets and can comment?

Personally 60" from 10ft is too big for me. Given that I find a 52" screen too big at that distance. Feel like I'm sat in the front rows at a cinema.
You'd probably get used to it. but then again until you try it you won't know for sure.

Certainly sounds a bit big at that distance, we sit about 9' away from our 42" sceeen. But as Ali says, you get used to it, we thought the 42" one was a bit big for about one day!

A 50 is way to big IMHO
I had a 50" and got rid of it in the end because it hurt everyones eyes and that was sitting 12 foot away from it, I find plasma's ain't as good as LCD now days either!
I got rid of mine and bought a Sony 40" 1080p HD LCD and we are over the moon with it! Crystal picture, Sound, everything!
Having a 50" Might impress the neighbours but you may aswell use it as a plant pot for all the good it will do your eyes! IMHO
So IMHO I would get a 40 or a 42 lcd and forget about the plasma!

12 ft away from our 26 inch watching the Grand Prix, tooooooo small but the missus is anti big tellies, though she has accepted the 37 in the other room, would go for another 37 in here, maybe a 42, 50 or 60 is way too big at 10 ft, you wont be able to see all the screen and your eyes will be bouncing around to bits of the picture, my doesnt want a big one as she doesnt want it to dominate the room, nowadays you can get away with a bigger one but 50 or 60 would, even for me dominate the room.

I'm not sure why somebody always says big screens are flash or to show off to the neighbours??
My neighbours have no idea what TV I have. If you go to the cinema, you want a big screen right? So if you are going to watch a film on your TV the same rule applies, you want the biggest screen you can accomadate or afford.
I sit about 17ft from a 50 inch screen, and now it seems tiny. I would love a 65+ inch TV!
I think 50inches from 9ft is fine. I watch a 8ft wide image on my projector, and that's not uncomfortable at all. Actually I wish I'd bought a bigger one!
A mate bought a 60 or 65 inch for his room, about 10ft, and I thought he was mad. I've got used to it know, and looks good. Watching a 60/65 from 10ft is probably no different to me watching my projector image from 17ft

Viewing Distance Calculator
For a 60" screen
TXH sugests 6.7ft for HD with 9.4ft max viewing distance to gain full benefit from 1080P
For SD distances would be larger

I'm 7' from a 50" and its great! Just make sure whatever you watch is at eye height from where you sit. That means a spirit level to the pupil of the newsreader from yours.
D
PS Hugely compressed MPEG2 SD DVD was never meant for screens bigger than 26" but its amazing what you can get away with!

Interesting thread I'm just about to buy a Panasonic TXP50X10 and I sit about 6-7ft from the TV. I've stood in the shop and the picture quality is great close to the set and I'm only really interested in playing the wii on it. Maybe the 50" might be a bit big for my room....

good range of responses here
surely hurting eyes is down to 'brightness' and poor refresh rate? I also believe a little pan-and-scan is okay, as watching our 32" means entirely static eyes - that can't be good surely
i think we are still going to go for the 60. We got used to our 32 very quickly and i reckon the same will happen with the 60 too.
Paulo, make sure your panasonic has the THX mode - it's very calibrated out of the box (to THX of course ), and makes an enormous difference apparently.

i was going to go for the 60ps8000 but my room is an l shape and the wall it was going on may have been filled by it. I went for the 50" instead and it is a beautiful set. I run it through a media centre so its all upscaled to 1080p and the pq is brilliant even close up. I do also have it connected to a sony 2400es but the upscaling is set to pass through on that (media pc is on the highest settings for antriscopic filterin, antialaysing (sp) etc)
Pioneer was my choice to be honest but with them pulling out I was a bit wary of going for one. My LG was bought for under 1k but I got the extended 5 yr warranty so it was just over 1k.

getting support for current lines is trouble enough, like for LGs, so a non supported tv isn't much worse
If I can't get hold of a kuro, then we'll put that down to karma - on paper/reviews it's still an amazing plasma tho.

Just out of interest we have a 46in Panny Viera and view from about 4m.
I have yet to see an LCD at this size as good as a plasma and I regret not getting the 50in. It seemed big when we got it, but not now!!!

Panasonic have bought all of Pioneer's plasma techno so either "old school" 8th Gen Kuro or Pani... the rest are good for daytime tv only

I view my 42" panni plasma from 5.5m (I should have got the 50" but the ex persuaded me that 42 was plenty... I've since got rid of her...LOL)
If you're seriously looking at a 60" mate... do the job properly and get a digital projector

I (like others) have the pj screen come down in front of the TV for films.
Before you splash out on a pj I would advice you to check whether you can get your room dark enough. Or whether wifey allows you to put up big black out blinds etc

thats actually just a rumour, although some of pioneers tv people now work for panasonic. They still reckon it will take a few years for panasonic to get to the pioneers levels of quality

great screen the lx5090. i recently bought a krp-500a having owned two panasonic panels previously and have to say to my eyes, its significantly better than the latest gen pannys..
i was looking at the new z series panny yesterday and apart from being ultra thin it was not a screen that blew me away. and you have to strap an ugly little wireless box to the bottom of the screen to talk to the media box, which imo completely ruins the look. panasonic really have to do better to take over from pioneer as the default choice for premiuim screens..
and the price! rrp £5500 for the 55"! for that money you can pick up a pioneer lx6090 with a five year warranty and still have enough change for the pioneer flagship blu ray player and an isf calibration.
granted the panasonic will probably be discounted when released, but for the money its a no brainer. kuro while you still can!

my mates a pioneer dealer, and he reckons pioneer say that stock will be available until early next year. the British made screens have now dried up and they're now being shipped from Japan. although he is selling them virtually as soon as they land at his shop, so its diffcult to say with certainty.

A pj cannot replace a TV, you need both. It is impractical to fire up the projector and amp and get the room pitch dark everytime you want to watch the news.
I (like others) have the pj screen come down in front of the TV for films.
