Default Why are laptop cpu fans silent

Just wondering on laptops they produce next to silent noise cos the fan must be a lot smaller. On desktop pcs even with a good fan it still louder then a laptop.

How come?

Laptops and desktops have the same pofermance. So couldnt I take a fan off a lapop and put it on my pc cpu?

Google is your friend

The laptop processor is typically a lower-powered processor than those found in similar desktop machines, although some laptop makers have used desktop processors in their laptops to get a performance edge. Processors designed for mobile computing generally consume less power, and thus run cooler than desktop processors. This is important because you want your battery to last a long time and you also don’t want to burn a hole through your lap. Desktop PCs typically have massive heat-sinks and fans to cool them down, but it’s hard to fit that stuff into a tiny laptop, and fans drain laptop batteries quickly.

Most laptops have a complex power management system. The fan is not alway on.
However, when it is on, it will likely have variable speeds depending on how hot the processor is runnning. So it might be running, but at a slow enough speed not to be very audible.
Brushless fans are really quiet anyway

Macs are almost totally silent, desktops and laptops. Always have been We have one PC running the RIP and management of a couple of Epson plotters and it sounds like an aeroplane taxiing along a runway when the fans kick in Switch all the PC based units off in the room and you can't hear any of the 10 Macs

If the Macs were so good they'd be running the Epson plotters and the RIP though wouldn't they?

Frankly these days there isn't much to choose between Mac and PC hardware other than the Mac has fancy looks. Let's face it it's just a glorified PC running Linux with a good GUI on the side.

The Macs are for the people to work on, efficiently, reliably, stylishly the PC's do the number crunching, awkwardly, whilst breaking down, often, and uncomfortably. It's why we have maintenance contracts for the PC stuff, but the Macs just run on and on. Ten years without fault for the last ones, which were only replaced when we needed faster processing.

Agreed the older Macs were fantastic, but I think the later ones will not compare. They are just PC architecture in a fancy box. Sadly

They've always been just another PC really. Old Motorola CPU's aside, they are fundamentally the same, apart from Apple specifying the components and thus being able to ensure that the OS runs faultlessly. I pity Microsoft really, as they have a billion know-it-all DIY hobbyists using tens of thousands of varying components from thousands of manufacturers, and they get it in the neck when things don't work right for everyone.

Yeah I know what you mean, but Microsoft brought a lot of that on themselves by not doing exactly what Apple did and ensuring their hardware was up to scratch. Nothing wrong with varying hardware as long as it really is the right specification. Agreed the DIYers dont help.... he says typing form a home built component PC

I just think in the past Macs were expensive because they were built properly using the right components. Now it seems they are driving the prices down somewhat and I just think it could spell some danger for them.

You've not heard fans until you've heard an HP Blade System run it's fans up to 100%. Sounds like Concorde taking off.

The difference between Apple and Microsoft is that Apple made their own computers and built their OS around their hardware. Microsoft is just a software company when it first started out. IBM largely dealt with PC hardware architecture. This was fine for a few years until other companies start up making IBM "clone" PC. Built largely on the same architecture but using different and cheaper components. This was the driving force that brought PC computing to the masses. Had the rises of cheaper clone PC not happened, then we'd probably not have PCs and laptops in most households and the software would not resemble anything that we have today. IBM PCs and Apple computers would still be expensive and regarded as "business" machines while home users would pick which H/W and S/W from the likes of Sinclair, Commodore, Oric, Dragon, Atari, etc etc, non of which are compatible with each other. We'd most likely not even have the "Internet".

So I think on the whole, Microsoft have done amazingly well in producing one OS that is compatible with all PCs made by different manufacturers on that front. However, having said that, I don't use Windows anything on my laptop as its too slow and unstable and open to security attacks and use linux instead.

Oh yeah, laptops are built for portability and power conservation and thus use less power and run cooler so requires smaller heatsinks and slower spinning fans, where as desktop PCs are built more for power and performance and so run hotter and faster CPUs and the PC case allows room for bigger coolers..
