Now if in the next few months the death rate on Swindon's roads does not increase can someone haul one of thse pious speed kills quangos onto the TV and grill them like never before as to why they continue to tell lies.

And then turn off the rest of the country's cameras or just announce what we knew all along that they are there to make money.

Road safety charity Brake said the council's decision to get rid of the cameras was "reckless" and said it was "entering into a very dangerous experiment with people's lives."
My heart bleeds.

Seeing that the total amount of road that all of Swindon's cameras enforced amounted to not much more than 500yards, I can't see how that suddenly makes the thousands of miles of roads in and around Swindon that have never been enforced by cameras any more dangerous.

Has it ever been proven that speed cameras (sorry safety cameras) ever saves lives - or reduce accidents ?

Save lives by reducing accidents? I would imagine so. I'm pretty sure we all slow down to pass through them and there have been a fair few fixed cameras erected in potential accident blackspots here in Derbyshire, so that can only reduce the chance of an accident. On the flipside there are plenty of mobile cameras just waiting to catch you out too.

There's an excellent article in Motorcycle News about innovative policing by Durham police. They have one of the loest accident rates, even amongst motorcylists. They do not have any speed cameras and use more crash prevention techniques to engineer safer roads and deal with the public in a more engaging and educational way. It seems to work............

What I have seen around SOME cameras is that people don't see them and then slam on to avoid being caught, the person behind may not be paying attention - I know they should be blah blah - and then creams into the back of the person slamming on.

Had that camera not been there then there is always the chance that this may have been avoided, this isn't to say that no cameras means no accidents it simply means, IMO, that some cameras will cause more accidents.

***** to it ban the lot of them

Anyhoo my corona is settling nicely so ciao for now.
