Buckfast is made in Devon

It's just the Scots are the only people mad (desperate) enough to drink the stuff

...and what exactly is "scotch" nationalism?

"Scotch" is an alcoholic drink, also known as whisky.

Aye, also tartan is Flemish in origin and the Kilt was invented by a Lancastrian ironmaster in the 1700s

Some great Scottish inventions there.

Telephone - not invented by Bell - he just had better lawyers

Steam engine - as an invention massively predating it's practical application south of the border in Darlington - not that Scottish then.

I could go on but that would be sad

At least you can claim the nominatively suited Scotch Egg, or should that be Scottish Egg.

As for a drink made by leaving rusty lumps of iron in lemonade, words fail me

No, there is one thing that is uniquely Scottish and never been replicated anywhere else in the world.

Deep

Fried

Mars

Bar.

Lovely after yer fish supper wi salt 'n' sauce

Oh God - the Krankies - my mind blotted them out. That puts the Mars Bars in the shade!

And Gordon Brown. Sat next to him in the bar at the Balmoral once!

I don't think Tony Blair is Scottish, merely went to school there to learn to speak English properly.

Telephone- the article says his invention is disputed, and rightly so. However he did hold the first patent, Meucci didn't, so there

Steam engine- Ok, that one is widely disputed, but before Thomas Savoury came along, it was just a toy. Newcomen's design incorporated much of Savoury's and Papin's discoveries. It wasn't until Watt's separate condenser, when steam engines became practical.

Another Scottish invention which is widely disputed is the television. Almost every developed country in the world lays claim to that one. I will concede that the television as we know it was invented by an American called Philo Taylor Farnsworth, but Baird had the worlds first public demonstration. It is a combination of many diferent inventions such as Nipkow's scanning disk, and Braun's CRT. One thing not in dispute is that the concept of television was outlined in a scientific paper published in 1908 by Alan Archibald Campbell Swinton (a Scotsman)

I lived there for years and the perennial banter was fun - and the haggis story made me laugh.

Next we will find that shortbread isn't Scottish either, or Edinburgh Rock, actually that last bit doesn't work as it was once part of England. Now it has just been colonised by the English.

Anyway, for the real insight, check out the boys day out on the Moor of Rannoch for a Scottish view of being Scottish (parental advisory - adult language)
