Default Watch Winders

I like to chop and change my watches, I bought a cheap watch winder a few months ago and use it to keep the watches running.

I read that a watch winder can cause stress on the same part of the watch over time.

I also read that leaving a watch can pool the oil and impair its time keeping ability.

Welcome your comments, do you have/use one or are they a waste of time and money?

Cheers!

It is better for an automatic watch movement to be kept running, rather than lay dormant, that is a fact.

I dont use them though, but all my watch get an outing so they dont lie dead for long.

The cheap ones are noisey, and the good ones are expensive.

I bought a cheap, eBay one and regretted it - noisy, and after a short period one of the rotors stopped working.

I then replaced it with a very nice Rapport winder... and it's fantastic. Looks beautiful in piano black and aluminium, with glass windows, and is virtually silent.

...only down side is that it's the best part of £400... You pays your money...

The main reason I dont have one/two/three is that my watches are kept in a floor safe, there is no room or access for cables to power the unit.

I would not keep a watch or worse two/three in a winder on show, ever...

My current winder is cheap as chips, and bloody noisy.

I was thinking of something like this;

1 x Quad 4 Automatic Watch Winder for Rolex on eBay (end time 26-Aug-09 00:24:42 BST)

I'd want it whisper quiet though.

Rapport...

When one of the rotors on mine starting making a slight noise (after about two years of constant use) I called their customer support manager - "They can do that occasionally, yes" - who sent me a SINGLE replacement motor to stop the noise, and then said that when they had a new batch of motors in he'd send me a further matched pair so that I could be certain that they'd both rotate at the same speed. Two weeks later another pair of motors arrived - and they're much more than a simple, standard electric motor - it's the complete unit with gear box, etc.

Very impressed with them and couldn't recommend either the winder or the company enough...
