A chance to see all the episodes of the series in a triple bill. After the Second World War, Britain was desperate to remain a great power alongside the new superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. Successive governments invested millions in an incredible array of weapons, in the hope that they would maintain the nation's place at the top table. In a short space of time an H-bomb was built and tested; the 'V' force, made up of hundreds of jet bombers, came into service; and Blue Streak, an intercontinental ballistic missile system, was designed and built. Engineering Britain's Superweapons tells the gripping and dramatic story of these new technologies.

In 1957 the newsreels announced with patriotic fanfare that Britain had entered the thermonuclear era of the H-bomb. But it was really just a large A-bomb. The British government wanted the world to believe that Britain had entered the elite group of nations with a serviceable thermonuclear bomb, even though it was still a long way off. But in exchange for British information, the Americans handed over the blueprint of their own H-bomb. From that moment, all British bombs were based on American designs. The so-called "independent" deterrent was in fact an anglicised American weapon.

Blue Streak was Britain's attempt to build its own intercontinental ballistic missile, intended to carry nuclear warheads to Russia in the event of war. The Blue Streak rocket was built, and its engines tested in Cumbria before being sent to Woomera in Australia for launch. But costs over-ran, and when it was suggested that the only way to make the missiles invulnerable to a pre-emptive Soviet attack was to bury them in silos across the English countryside, the government pulled the plug on the system.
