You can have a different supplier if you want and just have a BT line, I am with BT

Probably not since you have just ordered broadband from them. You may be locked in for 12 months to start with. Have a read of the info they send you and see what it says. If you are not tied to them you can choose to use any BB supplier that you wish who offer their services over a BT land line (thats basically all of them). The only providers you won't be able to use are cable providers - unless you get a cable installed.

technically speaking the ADSL is completely seperate from the phone line -- although obviously relies on the physical wires

i had my phone line from BT and ADSL from Nildram (now pipex), when I moved my BT line to a new property the ADSL still worked on my old property

Yes if you have orderd the broadband you are tied with em for 12 months, and to get out will cost you IIRC £280

am tied for 12 months after the 16th of this month (only just ordered it, to get out of it after that will cost £8 per month of the 12 months remaining)
