I was sat in my back garden and it did a very low steep banked turn over my house. Most surprised as I live 25 miles east of Shoreham.

Glad you had a good view of her Mart.

I never was impressed with the Jet Provost, real rattlebox! I liked the Vampire though. Pleasant to fly and one of the few aircraft which can do a loop at 30K feet.

I saw it too. I live 15 miles west of Shoreham and whilst outside swearing at project peugeot I heard and looked up in the sky. What a beautiful airplane. The shape, sound and way it flew, incredible. One thing I did notice is that it did leave 3 exhaust trails, which many model planes dont.

Do modern planes have catalitic converters or something similar ? or just better engines ?

Infact being local I had planes going over all day. The lancaster, cant be many of those left now, made you proud to be British ! :-)

Just read that there's only one flying vulcan left ! Retired in 1984.

Are there any concordes left flying ?? Or are all now decommissioned ?

Flying Concordes: 0.
All grounded and scattered around airports/museums of the world. I am 99.9% sure that none will ever be allowed to fly again.

Flying Vulcans: 1.
The one you saw is the only one in the air anywhere in the world and will remain so until it runs out of funding or flying hours (I think the engines have a finite life, calculated on the number of take-off cycles: once the spare engines are all used up, then that's it).

Flying Lancasters: 2.
1 in UK (Battle of Britain Memorial Flight) and 1 overseas (I think in Canada). There is talk of getting the East Kirby privately owned Lanc back into the sky, though.

They either do a hammerhead stall, enter a spin, or just generally drop out of the sky!

The Olympus engines in the Vulcan had this one fault of chucking out black smoke from the jet efflux. It was one of the best ways of spotting a Vulcan at low level and was not conducive to arriving unseen at a target. They never did sort it out so the best way to hide was to fly lower!

Tremendous plane, as was the concorde. Why isnt lottery money, or govn money help keeping this plane, and concorde, flying ?? Its part of our history and kids today need to see where we, as a society, came from in regards to war, British design and creatatively.

Nope, we spend our money of hordes of lazy dhs claimers, a over expensive Olympics, a turd Millenium dome, and other rubbish.

The heritage lottery fund has provided huge funding (about 3 million?) towards getting the Vulcan in the air. I doubt if they would do it again: it has been quite controversial (old war machine etc), especially when it looked like the whole project would be cancelled due to lack of funds and the money just gone to waste.

As for Concorde? Forget it. Too many obstacles in the way.

Why should the fact that it is an "old war machine" be controversial. It should not be forgotten that it played a major part in deterring nuclear war during the Cold War, and also it caused severe restrictions to the Argentinians on the Falklands, enough to make the difference between winning and losing.

I think that is something to be proud about, even if I can be suspected of a certain amount of bias.
