Default Spelin n gramer

It's worrying but I've recently noticed I've begun to care less about my spelling and grammar in casual usage (not, I am glad to say, in formal or official usage). I've also found myself having to check the correct spelling of certain words, instead of being happy to trust that I know them, as I seem to see them written, or used, incorrectly more often than not.

The comments made about separate and independence made me think. Had I written a quick response without taking much care, would I have got the spellings right? A few years ago I would have been sure I would. Now I think I probably would but am much less certain. I see those two words, and several others, spelt incorrectly so often that sometimes they don't look immediately wrong.

Perhaps continually hearing how it does not matter has finally worn me down?

What's next? How does one correctly progress into ignorance and apathy?

Mine gets exercised every day, but that exercise is not necessarily based on spelling.

lol I dont give a crap about spelling on here either.
I will use "thru" at times and a couple of other slang words, but not a lot more.

Not into text talk unless im trying to save characters on text messages, or being VERY quick about a reply.

But spelling as a whole out there, is becoming shocking I have noticed. Even grown adults using this new language thats popped up.

Not a subject that overly concerns me to be honest

Oh ok

Some words i can let go (sort of), but your/you're/there/their/they're/too/to/its/it's/lose/loose/breaks/brakes i just think anybody who's had any sort of secondary schooling should be able to spell correctly.

Best one we've had on here recently was "overall" when the intended word was "overhaul". Not the first time i've seen that one done, but goodness me that's poor in my opinion.

My spelling is awful, and always has been too. I think quicker than I write, so if I re-read the sentance Ive missed bits out. Sometimes I cut / paste the reply through Word to check the spelling, but only if its one of those `ignore the subject, highlight the spelling` arguments :-)

What I hate more though, is when people write text speak. Thats terrible. And whats worrying more and more kids of today seem to speak / write like this.

Poor spelling is quite common in the IT world though. We relie on spell checkers, and I deal with unix commands all day. Lets not talk about hand writing either, as christ, I cant even read my own writing. Infact Ive just written out a ToDo list for myself and I cant understand what the hell Ive got to do :-) hahaah

As long as the person you're communicating with understands you, then cool. But spelling, grammer is something I need to improve as I need to ensure my son spells correctly.

Thank god I speak well though.

Quilt / kilt, :-), its how I pronounce the word, so spell it according to how it sounds.

Quilt and overall could both have been a case of never actually knowing the wrong word was being used. Surprisingly common. Toyota Celica Car Science possibly the most dire manifestation i've seen in a long time...

Not worth worrying about really. This forum is teetering on becoming a corrective establishment!

Some may well be trying, but observation would suggest they are being largely unsuccessful.

I'll probably be unpopular here, but who cares...

Some people are good at spelling/grammar, some aren't, simple. That can be for a number of reasons, someimes laziness, sometimes due to level of education, sometimes depending on if they're in a hurry, and I guess sometimes, some people just for the life of them can't get a good grasp of written language.

Whilst I appreciate it may annoy some people out there, not everyone writes at the same level, but if people are at least trying to make something legible, as opposed to writing in text speak for example, give them a break. Not everyone is perfect, or shares the same abilities.

Personally, I find it more annoying to see someone jump on another person, just because they have made a mistake. It's not an English lesson, and no matter how frusrating it may be to see these common mistakes, it doesn't really influence ones own life.

Just my 2 pence.

My brain is cream crackered!!
Since becoming a stay at home mum to my two children I just don't have the 'need' to use it so much.
I actually find myself looking at words and they never look right. I have to revert back to old spelling lessons like ''I before E except after C''!! And then I know that things are really bad.

I hate how it makes me look like a complete fool, and it does put me in a situation where I try to say something at least half way decent and with composure, an I do something stupid like spell Lose and Loose!

I have just applied for a job, that I can do from home and fit in around the children, as I am sick of seeing my brain rotting away.

Thanks Lisa, it makes me feel better that not everyone is grading people on their spelling.

If I wanted to have a lesson in th English language I would sign up for a course at the local college.

That said, I have done all that and surprisingly I past all that school stuff with flying colours. It is just now whilst I fester away at home that I am worse. And usually it doesn't bother me, but when it feels feel like you have an english tutor breathing down your neck........ things just aren't fun!

Just having one of those days Bigsinky...... I am still smiling though.

My spelling is awful, but as long as I get my point across I couldn't really care, as long as it is readable.

I always have my dunce hat on stand bye though, just in case I have a 'quilt' moment.

SN users outta coin that saying!

Funnily enough, I'd say back when I was in school/university, my spelling and grammar was probably alot better, as I was reading and writing alot more. It's never been my strong point (I managed a A* in French/A in Italian, only a C in English ), but I'd say it was better.

Now I do a job where I rarely write a thing, and I think it makes a difference. The most I read or write now, is probably when I come on here. I often find myself putting a word down, and being unsure of the spelling, so I go and check, but then there are words that I think look right, so leave them, or stuff I just miss. I don't mind admitting my faults.

This could go on forever, especially if we brought up all the 'isms' that do my head in!
American-isms such as 'OFF OF' Do my head in. For example, I will now get 'OFF OF' my soapbox and stop moaning,# about bad spelling as I cannot spell very well!
Haha!!

I forgot definitely. Second only to your/you're.

Finite. Looks right. Finate. Looks wrong.

From finite it's an easy jump to definite, or definitely.

I do try not to be an utter **** on here, as on the whole, people's reaction is negative, not positive. I'm not too stupid to realise that.

I saw an advert from Vodafone who advertised a QWERTY keyboard feature but advertised it as a QUERTY keyboard.

I check my replies and generally it's of a decent standard but I am not one to jump on replies, however, if it's an Ebay auction or the likes then terrible spelling and grammar will put me off the seller.

I agree with Lisa. As long as your point is made, then great. Incorrect spelling isnt as bad as poor grammer, as you cant get a feel of what the person is trying to say.

The replies that are in one long sentance, are too hard to read and I often skip those.

Im glad my quilt / kilt has made several people's lists :-)
