Default Government deems pint glasses too dangerous and wants them banned

Seems our government wants to ban the traditional pint glass from our pubs as they are too dangerous. In other words, too many yobs glass people with them. Hence they are looking at a compulsory safety container for us to sup our drink from.

(personally I guess the new "container" will be smaller and probably made of plastic )

What about bottles. I see smashed stella bottles everywhere I turn these days. The local pondlife even piled a load of broken bottles at the bottom of the slide in the local park, hoping to have a laugh as some poor kid cut himself to shreds

I know a lot of places that have had the nasty plastic pint glases for ages.

Not a patch on a proper pint glass though.

Some people are scum, but will banning pint glasses help? Even if pint glasses and bottles are banned entirely will this really make a difference?

Personally I think not. The events where this has become necessary already use safety glasses, and either ban bottles or pour their contents into one of these plastic glasses. That seems to have the problem pretty much sorted out.

In all other places even without glass, there will be other weapons that someone can use. Its the person that is the problem, remove one weapon and they will just find another

I hate drinking from plastic glasses. I wonder if pubs will allow people to bring their own glasses

Lol you would have people bringing extra large glasses and trying to blag a "pint"!!

True about finding another weapon though, but maybe not one as damaging as glass.

Ever tried to break a Coke bottle? The things would break the table you tried to smash them over.

I happened to request a Hoegarden the other evening and was shocked at the size and weight of the glass it came in. I had a flash of some mad nutter doing "a Begbie" with one and the damage that it would do when it hit someone. Not sure if it would break or not, but it would hurt.

They wouldnt bother if the people of this country could see their way to not hitting each other with them, go to any A and E on a Friday night and see the damage, I can see the value in doing this in pubs with a history of violence and leaving it as is in say a country pub that rarely has or never has had any bother.

As has been said, ban glass in city centre pubs on a Friday night but allow glass in the country pubs, restaurants etc.

It's nannying but I'd rather I was drinking from a plastic glass that some drunken idiot slashing away at me with the stub of a glass because I looked at his pint.

Chairs and tables will have to be banned as well then. Or bolted to the floor.

If this keeps going, pubs will have to have padded walls and cotton wool overcoats for all the patrons.

I also think the minimum sentence for glassing someone should be set to at least 5 years - with no time off for good behaviour - as a deterent. Second offense, 10 years, third offence life.

A mate of mine got glassed in front of me 20 years ago. The ****** in question got 18 months, of which he served less than 9. My mate to this day still has an unpleasant scar on his face.

It's all down to the bars and pubs you drink in mainly. The idiots who glass people will find another way to do their damage. If you drink in decent establishments then it's very very unlikely you'd ever experience the trouble that leads to people using glasses.

Yeah, but the cost will be the same.

I'm actually shocked we are still allowed to ask for a "Pint" and not the euro "20 fluid ounces" please

That's still imperial

The PC-Euro term would be 568ml please

Absolute bloody bollox suggestion from a bunch of halfwit wnakers who are on their way out. It's a pity there's nobdy with any sound policies to fill the void.

Until this country get a grip of its real problems such as the binge drinking aggressive culture of a proportion of its population then no amount of meddling with the effects of those problems is going to do any good.

We need to face facts, some of our population are scum. Sad, but true. With a spineless government and an equally spineless opposition nothing will get done about it either.

It demonstrates the gross incompetence of this bunch of useless individuals when it comes to dealing with people in any respect you like to name.

All they can think of is to ban something which will of course upset the large minority who know how to behave themselves. As ever their spineless characters decide to kow tow to the troublemakers and do nothing to dissuade them from their violent and unsocial behaviour. This is the attitude which will do nothing to cure the problem.

The real answer is to threaten the yobs with very heavy penalties and to actually carry them out as well so that it is just not worth committing such crimes.

F1 / Leslie - Couldn't agree more. Gov need to tackle the problem at the source.

Has anyone ever heard of someone being glassed with a tea pot ? I havent, perhaps they should server pints in teapots. Not exactly macho to suddenly grab hold of a one and say "Commme on, I'll pot ya"

This is it, don't pint glasses have the things on their inner bottoms to keep a good head on lager?

Wouldn't plastic pints be flat then?

That would keep me happy, as I don't like a head on lager. Not that it mattters much these days, as we rarely go out.

That aside, totally agree with F1 and Les. Social problems need to be tackled at the source, not by just treating the symptoms along the way, which solves very little.

I wouldn't like to see the damage a 1/2 litre Hefe Weizen glass or a 1litre Oktoberfest maß would do to a person! But saying that we don't go around getting drunk and glassing each other so not much chance of the traditional glasses ever being banned here.

Neither would I ever argue with those nice ladies who carry umpteen full glasses around the place!
