Default Seen some good films recently....

After seeing some hyped but disappointing films over the last few months I've been pleasantly suprised.
These were films that I wasn't expecting a great deal from or heard much about, that always makes it better if you have low expectations to start with!

1) The International

2) Duplicity

3) 50 dead men walking

4) The traitor

Got Knowing to watch tonight which I understand is OK but no more than OK.

Waiting for District 9 next week is it?

I want to see Moon and Inglorious Basterds

Theres some good looking films coming - Pandorum, Surrogates, Avatar, Iron Man 2

Distant films that I'm looking forward too and keeping everything crossed they aren't poop.

Predator 3 - starts filming end of sept
Alien Prequel - Ridley Scott to direct to so possibly won't suck *****.
The Thing prequel - not guaranteed to happen
Robocop reboot - likely to happen and again has respected pilots so might not suck *****.

I'll hate everything about transformers 3 but I'll still go to the cinema and buy the blu ray.

I watched Duplicity a few weeks ago. Very disappointing.

I was pleased with Transporter 3. As far as the Transporter films go, they do exactly as they say on the tin.

As much as I am a big fan of Jason Statham, he is getting a bit type cast with the roles he is taking on.

Other films I have enjoyed lately are :-

Last house on the left. 8/10
Fighting 6/10
Terminator Salvation 7/10
The Hangover 8/10

I could go on, but I won't! lol.

Also looking forward to watching Funny People, Splice and Surrogates (Bruce Willis).

Surrogates is one that I am looking forward to see as it is a really new fresh idea. Have a look out for it, ad if anyone sees i before me, let me know what its like.

Liked Knowing much more than expected. Nicholas Cage goes quiet for a bit then does a handful of films in one go. Some are not bad (Knowing) some are howlers (Ghost Rider - probably Bangkok Dangerous?)

On a film vibe, I'm planning a Vietnam themed week. Casualties of War, Platoon, Hamburger Hill, Full Metal Jacket, We Were Soldiers, Apocalypse Now

I saw four films recently and three of them were rubbish.

The International - pretty good, but a bit slow in places.

The Watchmen - dire. So bad I didn't finish watching it.

City Rats - utterly dire and depressing (black comedy should have some comedy in it...)

Passengers - Sh*te. Very slow and tedious and I guessed the "twist" less than half way through the film. Even the doe-eyed Anne Hathaway couldn't save this one - way too many clothes on.

Well Donkey Punch was a 7/10.
It had the usual score of 'pretty people' in it, well the girls weren't bad I suppose. A good bit of sex, and then plenty of OTT antics with a motor (off a motorboat) and some very twisted people. And all under one roof.

I givee Ice Age 3 - 8/10 too.

The kids didn't seem bothered but I watched it anyway.

I watched ''The haunting in Connecticut'' and only give that a 5/10.
It was nothing like the real facts, but then again, the actual real events of what happened were minimal, compared to the hyped up clap trap that the film spouted.

Went to see inglorious bastids this evening, while I found it a well shot film I was disturbed by the level of violence in it, and the cheers in the cinema when they were caving someones head in with a baseball bat

Oh contrere!. It, like all Tarantino and hollywood takes on the war should be taken very lightly. Yes there are the set pieces of violence, but if you were to compare it say to Pulpfiction, or Kill bill, its like the disney standards are to The Black Cauldron. I.E. no where near as frightening or scary to the usual audience.

That might be my next film to add to my list then, along with Splice.

2009 so far....

Defiance - 6/10 - Slow paced and lacking in the desperation of modern WWII movies.

Outlander - 2/10 - Vikings, monsters and spacemen. Silly.

Underworld 3 - 6/10 - Not as good as the previous, but OK for a vampire flick.

Taken - 8/10 - Fast paced hard hitting thriller with Liam Neeson as a double-hard b@$t@rd.

Watchmen - 3/10 - Waited a long, long time for it to end. Crap.

Knowing - 7/10 - Predictable but interesting Proyas movie, spoilt a little by Nicholas Cage.

Fast & Furious - 2/10 - Rubbish. Spared a '1' as it has cars and girls in it.

Wolverine - 6/10 - Fun but hollow comic action.

Star Trek - 7/10 - As a nonb-Trekie I was pleasantly surprised. Too much character development, but well made overall.

Angels & Demons - 5/10 - So-so, simply more of the Da Vinci Code riddles, twists, double-crosses and chases.

Terminator Salvation - 6.5/10 - A good Terminator movie should be at least a 9. Missed the mark, but entertaining as an action movie.

Transformers 2 - 4/10 - Way too long. Action too close and fast to know who was twatting who. Good effects but poor acting with a weak story which tries to be over-complicated.

Harry Potter - 4/10 - I recall lots of teens flirting, teasing and kissing, and maybe something about wizards. The opening 15 mins in 3D at IMAX was good, but I was disappointed there wasn't any further 3D scenes.

Drag Me To Hell - 2/10 - If Sam Raimi had made this 25 years ago after Evil Dead, and when I was 15 I'd have maybe enjoyed it. Ridiculous.

Looking forward to District 9, 2012, The Hurt Locker and AVATAR. Not a Tarantino fan, so I'll catch Inglourious Basterds later on a download maybe. Might give A Christmas Carol (animated - Jim Carey) a go in IMAX 3D at Xmas.

Inglorious Basterds and The Hangover are my two recommendations for this year.

Unless you want a girly film, then you'd have to watch Marley & Me. When I saw that, there were loads of big burly blokes coming out crying

Lol, yeah exactly. I saw it months ago, and I enjoyed it as much as chick flicks go. It did what it said on the tin.
I can't say I was overly sobbing, but the fact I have a lovely dog who is now coming up to being 12 years old, you have to understand that for some people it is not the actual film that people cry at. It is the way in which we use it s a connection with reality.

Damn you mr_impreza and you are so lucky with your ability to turn off your feelings and emotions, did you lose your way on the yellow brick road when trying to find yourself a heart?

I saw the hangover a few weeks ago. Easily a 8.5/10 for me.

I watched Drag me to Hell on Friday. The biggest load of poop I have watched fo a while 2/10.

I saw Bruno Last night. Was ok, i'd still only give it a 5/10 There wasn't much substance to it. More shocking and slightly funny in some parts.

Terminator Salvation i'd give it maybe a 7/10. It lacked the underlying story that the other have had. The other films have had the action film full of excellent special effects, as well as having the sub layer where the story is told and the progression between the characters is built on.
I feel it laked the progression and we were sort of dumped in the future with John and his pregnant wife. Also we find out small bits about Johns dad, but I didn't feel it was a significant enough piece of the film and needed to be expanded on.
It just didn't go that extra mile that the other films have.

I still enjoyed it though.

Let the right one in - sure it's Swedish and subtitled, but what a movie. If you like vampire movies give this a go. Atmospheric, well acted and downright spoky

Has the Hurt locker been released over here? I'm sure I've seen blu ray rips to download ? Am I thinking of the right film, with Guy Pearce?
