Idols, heroes and inspirations - what would you say to yours?
Was sat watching (for my sins) BB with the missus last night. It just so happened to be the birthday of one of the contestants who received a card from his idol, Vivienne Westwood, which held a message saying that she would like to meet him when he's out of the house.
It all seemed a little too fabricated for me (as is the rest of the show) but it kind of got me thinking as to what I would say to (or ask) my idol if I got to meet him/her in person.
Now I don't really idolise anyone but Queen's drummer Roger Taylor (and his drumming) has been a massive inspiration to me - he is the main reason I learned to play the drums (after first seeing him at Wembley Stadium on the Queen Magic '86 tour) and he has been a massive inluence in my own drumming style.
There are so many questions I could ask Roger Taylor as he was in one of the world's biggest and most influential rock bands of all times and he must have seen and done some things that none of us could ever dream of doing or seeing; but if I had the chance the one question I would ask him is what it was really like to be in Queen? It's probably an all too predictable and familiar question but there must have been so much that went off behind the scenes in Queen that we never knew about, or will never get to know about (anyone who's seen Metallica's film, Some Kind of Monster, will know what I'm talking about).
So fellow scoobynetters:
1. Who is your idol/inspiration/hero?
2. What would be the one thing you would like to say to (or ask) them?

if i could meet anyone in the world it would be my idol 'Michael Jordan' ive grown up watching him play and become one of if not the greatest sports man of all. he was the reason i got into basketball in my younger years and if it wasnt for an injury to my knee i would still be playing now.
he is an outstanding sportsman whos generosity is second to non with his 'Michael Jordan charity work'
a true icon in my eyes and if i had the chance ide ask why he retired...i was gutted to say the least when he hung up his shirt

probably that insane french guy who climbs up really tall buildings barehanded. Did you see that picture of him on the ball which was on top of the spike which was on top of one of the petronas towers? Absolute insanity.
Naturally I'd ask what motivates him.

My Grandad drove a Sherman tank (well several actually) across North Africa & up through Italy
No celebrity I can think of even gets close to that
I see him once or twice a week, and I'll ask him the same thing tonight when I get there, as I usually ask him; "Do you want a brew, Grandad?"

okay -- back on topic
Roger Federer -- awsome awsome talent, true sportsman, would love to tell him how I am bringing up my tennis playing son to emulate him on and off the court - win and loose
a very good friend of mine is a well known sports journo and he said to me -- never meet your heroes -- they will always disappoint you
his heroes BTW
Ilie Nastase (who he said did not)
Charlie George
Liam Brady

When it comes to motor racing, the most pleasant and knowledgable man I have met is Murray Walker. My friend and I met him at Goodwood Revival and we had a very long chat. His knowledge of all kinds of racing, both 'bikes and cars is amazing and we learned an amazing amount from him. A very nice bloke.

So many !
Jim Clark, Donald Campbell, Sirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Roger Clark, Hannu Mikkola, Stig B, etc.
Never saw the first four "live", but did the rest....
Ask, too many questions ?

P.S. Anti-hero = Schummy for "that" move on Hill, so many years ago - hate him !

1 Had dinner with Nelson Mandela in the 90's in Johannesburg
2 Asked him to pass the salt (amongst a few other more interesting questions, but mainly sat there more than a little dumbstruck trying to think of something that wasn't either too banal or too predictable)

actually I'll agree with you. I admire what The Stig stands for. There is a certain purity and simplicity about him which makes a refreshing change. He doesnt feel the need to justify his actions with flowery speaches or even self depreciation. Neither does he advertise what he does or revel in how good he is. He lets his driving do the talking and thats where it ends.
Made up character he may be, but its a quality I like
