Another exciting topic - cats!
No stopping me today with interesting and discussion worthy topics!
I had to have my cat put down a few months ago and had wanted to give it until next year before thinking of having another. However, a friend of my wife who runs a sanctuary type place has two kittens that need a home. they've been fettled/trained so are pretty much plug and play but are apparently a bit timid.
We have family of my wifes staying with us for 2 weeks while their house is renovated from this weekend and there will be people around all the time. When they go the cats will be alone from 9.30 to 5.30 - not usually an issue for cats.
I'm just wondering if it might be best wait until the family has gone so the cats get used to how things are from day 1 OR get them used to thier new home whilst people are around during the day. The downside to having them when family are around is that its alot of people for timid cats to cope with and they'll bond closer to the wrong people - if you know what I mean.
I'm going tomorrow to see the cats on my own. If I go with wife and daughter they'll bully me into saying yes whatever if I go on my own I can judge pretty quickly how they are in themselves.

Kittens are pretty adaptive things. We got ours 1 week before we moved house and I was worried how she would cope with the move. No worries there, she started exploring the new place straight away.
She is 5 months old now and was a timid creature to begin with. That lasted about 2 weeks before she became a complete nutter Its bad enough having one tearing around the house at break-neck speed, so I dread to think what its like with 2 of them!
It would be better to have people around for the first few weeks until they get used to the place, though at least they have each other for company.

I remember your thread about letting the poor chap go
Didnt think it would be long before the subject of getting another ball of fluff came up again, especially when women and kids are involved
I think it would not make any difference if you had people or not, they seem to adapt pretty quickly

You might just as well get them. Its usually better to replace a previous pet soon anyway. I think they will soon settle, as ever its the food that keeps them interested to start with at least.

We'll see. I think they are from a farm so might be a bit wild. If their too mental it might not be possible. Although yes, I have names in mind - my old cat was Tiggs but being ginger and quite chunky he was always Jonesy to me.
For those non-alien geeks among us.
Dogs have owners, cats have staff.
I like that.

If they're semi-feral and timid, then quite honestly I would wait until your household is back to normal. They will pick up on any vibes that you're giving out whilst you've got the rellies staying with you.
Also, although they're litter-trained, it will be a huge upheaval for them going somewhere new and strange, with a lot of big scary people so it could set them back a bit. Personally, I would wait (and go and see them on my own first).
Oh........and can we have pics when you get them?

The quicker you get them in the house the quicker they will get used to the surroundings, they will easily adapt and scratch half your belongings
Hope you enjoy them, Biscuit has been one of the better furry additions to our family in recent years.

Went to have a look. We were with them for about half an hour and at first they wouldn't come out from under the basket but by the time we went the female was mooching about us. The male is smaller and isn't as adventurous but started to come near before we left.
My wifes parents aren't staying with us now (phew!) so its just the wifes sister and her BF and baby and they are quieter people than us. I would like to leave them but the lady that is keeping them for the rescue centre is full and needs the room for new arrivals. I also want them checked and tested for illness ASAP (can't lose another cat to Luekeamia)
As per Swiss' comment I guess the deal was already done We pick them up tomorrow - I'll pop some pics up when they emerge from behind the sofa Going to be interesting coping with twins!
