I'd rather trickle roughly-crushed glass into my eyes, thanks.

Talking

Sooo.. fickle...

Open those glass encrusted eyes.. then expand that long dead organ that you would call 'your mind'... embrace the future m8 - everyone has a big hug for you there..

I AM a Luddite, and proud of it. I also like modern, adventurous music, just not that kind. All that bollocks just reminds me of pre-schoolers cutting up Old Masters to make a collage and getting a gold star on their exercise book. Perhaps one day they might show the diligence and self-sacrifice required to play a proper instrument.

At what point did "songs" turn into "mixes" exactly?

Around about.. 1990 imo - although some may claim it was earlier.. tunes began to be 'designed' with mixing in mind. Is that a bad thing in the land of Bo then?

Electro isn't really my cup of tea. Uplifting Trance & Progressive gets me going - something with a driving riff and sanctuous melody

Think you're about a decade late there. Think back to Martin Rushent and Trevor Horn's early 80's productions. Lot of remixes and as you say tunes deisgned to be remixed.

You really ought not to persist with your pose of pretending to like this wretched nonsense. Choose a genre which is more in keeping with your age.

I have two USA Fender Telecasters, a '96 and a '99. And the music you're touting is anachronistic in its own right. It lost its relevance as a "new" thing fifteen years ago. But I take your point.

I know... well, I don't know, but I would assume that to be case - I was taking the p*ss Not that old then? It's the pre-CBS models that are the collectable ones as I have always understood it.

That's true as well... it's (music) pretty much all old hat now. Recycled ideas and styles in whatever is your preferred genre. Though 'electro' house does offer a slightly different and original slant on house music.

slightly....

Lucky then that we are both here to inject the required innovation.

Yeah, the pre-CBS examples are the crock of gold as far as collectors are concerned. The weird thing is, the 1970s USA instruments attract very high prices even though it is universally agreed that those years are truly the rock-bottom of Fender production quality. Really, really crap. It took the Japanese (as usual) to show the world how far USA standards had sunk. The Jap factories began to produce the "Squier" [sic] brand in the early 1980s. Actually, they were originally intended to produce affordable Fender-branded instruments, but when the Yanks saw what the Japs were producing they got a massive wake-up call.

USA Fenders are now top-notch instruments once again (if overpriced), and the Squier brand is firmly budget quality. Get your hands on an early 1980s Squier, and you will be playing one of the best instruments ever to have a Fender badge.

But I digress.

Maybe they were crap in the 70's because Hendrix and co kept setting them on fire and smashing them

Interesting...

So, in your opinion, what are the qualities that make one Telecaster superior to another - regardless of the make..

Well, the Telecaster's probably not the best instrument to start on when discussing guitars. It was originally meant to be a "workmanlike" guitar and I prefer a Strat, if truth be told. But it does a few things really well and I play one now because nothing else looks or sounds quite right with the band I'm in at the moment.

As regards the qualities that set one Telecaster guitar above another:

Alder body

Top quality overwound bridge pickup.

Neck profile -either it feels great or it doesn't.

Top hardware.

Authenticity; if you're recreating a vintage sound then use the bridge style of the time. The old-style bridge with three saddles has inaccuracies of intonation that produce a distinctive sound. Try playing "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" on a modern six-saddle Telecaster and it won't sound right.

After all that, I have to say that the instrument you play is of minimal importance, it's how you play it that matters. Pete Shelley played "Ever fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't Have" on a guitar from Woolworth's. OK, it's not Beethoven, but that song will last forever.
