I've put a desposit down a car which I intend to buy tomorrow. It's got 50k on it, and full BMW SH. The car is under 2 years old.
I've just had an HPI check done, and its come back clear, but its come back saying the mileage at July 2008 was 83k, but says "this information is provided by a 3rd party" and cannot be verified.
Obviously I'm now a bit suspicious, even though it would be an effort to clock up 83k miles in about 8 months, but not impossible.
Question is, with it having a full dealer history, would BMW be able to confirm to me the mileage at last service, or are they not likely to release this information?
Any advice appreciated

No harm in asking. Is it one owner? If not call the previous owner if possible and ask them...
I would say you aren't looking for anything outrageous just trying to correct what seems to be an error.
Could be worth asking your provider to have another look. That seems like a lot of miles for any vehicle.

No real way to verify a cars mileage, it can be clocked before every service and Mot. You've got to look for wear and tear, if it looks like it has done more than 50, it probably has.

Surely if BMW say they have serviced it by the book they should have a record of it's mileage? If so, get them to state that it's genuine. They must be able to do this if for no other reason than to preserve their reputation? Are you buying from BMW?

Some ECUs (Bosch, probably includes BMW) have a value in their EEPROM that stores the number of operating hours. It is common on used Porsches to check the number of operating hours and compare with the mileage.

Thanks guys, I'm going to call the guy tomorrow and find out the garages which have serviced it, and call them.
Can't check MOT records as it won't be due its first MOT for over a year.
Bit hacked off as I've already put down the desposit and didn't expect anything to come up with a car under 2 years old. Just hope the BMW dealers can put things straight.

might be worth checking the wear on the seats, steering wheel and gear lever. usually a tell tale sign of high mileage if it looks like they have been used a lot.
however newer digital odometers are very easy to clock apparently.
as posted worth checking the garages records, someone must have a better idea of mileage.
what car is it?,

You should be able to ring BMW UK or any dealer with the reg number/vin number and check service history.
Mistakes happen on HPI mileage checks all the time.
Basically what can happen is, when a dealer HPI checks it and does an NMRCheck (National Mileage Register Check), they input the current mileage on the HPI website. If this is wrong or higher than the actual mileage, the next time someone does the NMR check with the correct mileage, it will show up as a discrepancy,
I've seen this happen alot. You will probably find the 83,000 should have been 8,300.

Dave, yeah I'll have a good look at those items, and obviously take it out for a drive as well.
The annoying thing is, even if the BMW dealers can clarify the mileage, when I come to sell it people are likely to see this on the HPi check and obviously it doesn't look good.
Boro, I had thought that - but is there any way of changing the information on the HPi database? I'm guessing probably not?
