Selling a car
Have a car for sale at the moment, a potential buyer has emailed saying they are very interested in buying at full price, but the want the Reg no and VIN no so that they can HPI check. Should I release this info, they also want more pics.
If the car is sold and I accept a bank draft which subsequently bounces would I still be able to claim on my car insurance.
Any advice much appreciated.

yes vin and reg are usually requested for HPI, sometimes just the reg will do but the buyer may want to double check the car hasn't been ringed etc.
I don't think car insurance will not pay out on a bounced bankers draft - I may stand corrected though

I'd be asking whether this guy is ringing a car himself. Surely if interested in a car then you'd call?
Ask him for an email address and landline phone number then give the info over when you are satisfied he is genuine.

Surely you would only do an hpi check after seeing the car and happy in the knowledge that you want it?
I agree with the above that he could possibly be ringing a car himself and by looking through the ads it's an easy way to find a car that matches a stolen one and get the info for it.

I would see if you could arrange he takes the car off you if he buys it at a time the banks are open so you can take the bankers draft in with him before he takes the car. I've just sold my scoob for cash and not knowing whether it could have been a bundle of fakes etc i took the bloke to the bank and paid it in and then gave him the keys. He was fine with that. I believe bankers drafts have been faked so I don't trust any form of payment until it is in the hands of the bank.

Could be a stolen draft or faked as B2Z says. Cash is king, get one of those fancy pens from maplin to check the notes, but remember they don't work on 50s, you have to do the red dye test.

As said above bankers drafts can be fake. You can even pay a fake draft/fraudulent draft into the bank, get the cash in your account and then find that its taken away from you a month later. I don't think there are any time limits when it comes to recovering cash from fraud. If the trail ends with you, its you who loses the money. Very unfair, but it was a common practice to scam ppl with fraudulent drafts. Not sure if anything has changed to help protect people.
