Question Question for Martin 2005

Dear Martin, further to our exchange yesterday you stated that the UK had the £worse benefits system in Europe and hardly an attraction£.

I did ask for proof of this as I for one do not believe this although i am happy to be proved wrong.

Please, please enlighten a, DM reading, fascist div (me)

I think we probably have one of the worse benefits systems in Europe too..

if you are an English /Scot man /Welsh (to appease all) sheep trying to claim any money after working all your life...everyone else well they are given everything, especially imigrants.

is it your assumption that the UK receives the majority of the world’s refugees/asylum seekers -- or Europe’s? for that matter

do we get more asylum seekers than France or Germany? (in the last 20,10,5 years)

would your argument hold so true if Germany or even France had most refugees?

These figures must be fairly well known, can’t be that difficult to find out

What the hell is this???

Paul I'm not going to play your game, the number are there and quite clear. Rather than asking me questions why not back up some of your own assertions.

I note that you didn't respond to my questions, but again I guess that different?

Oh and thanks for this, I really appreciate all the BS, nice one Pal

Humour me, please point me in the right diection of these 'numbers' Martin you could silence me and any other critics so easily...

Oh and Martin, it is just SN, not the real world or of any significance. I seem to remember you told me to lie down in a dark room as i was having a turn last night I did and it worked

When i tried to claim JSA some 3 years ago i was not entitled to
Paid in since 1980-2002 without a break, went self employed, paid my stamp and because i was self employed for a certian period of time i was not entitled to JSA - maybe Martin is right...maybe i just proved it to myself LOL!

I only asked a question, others have added to this, what exactly do you feel i have done except ask a question.

Look if you feel aggreved then fine, i will PM you as i am genuinely interested in the answer and happy to be corrected.

This is not like you to take it to heart, you usually come back with equal or more gusto - no offence meant at all

BTW the last PM i sent you you did not reply to, even though it was to your benefit.

If you use Net Replacement Rate (a measure that may be flawed but is commonly used) to compare unemployment benefits across a variety of countries - according to the most recently available comparative I could find the UK did indeed fare very badly.

The NRR - or the amount of money you could expect in benefits was on average 54% of wages.

Most countries in Europe had NRRs of between 60-75%.

This is using data from the OECD. The UK was amongst the very lowest with only Korea, Australia, Ireland and Hungary below us in the league table.

Over the past couple of years, other European countries have tightened this as unemployement has risen. In this period it would seem that the UK has risen up the league table, not by paying any more (it is pretty much unchanged) but other countries have cut back more quickly.

Not very exciting stuff by Daily Mail standards. Hard to spin this one.

There's a wealth of economic statistics on the OECD website, lots and lots of detail on Social Security and Welfare across the EU and beyond. I'm not posting this stuff up because as you'll see it's a bloody nightmare to extract or link to.
