Default Buying a dog

We are about to buy a dog, it's quite expensive so me being me i'm going to make an offer rather than pay the asking price.
Am i being cheeky or is it normal practice when buying a puppy?
Nik.

If you don't ask, you don't get.

Prob depends on the breed if its a popular breed then yeah you might get a deal,if its not a common breed then doubt it

Always be careful as from my experience the one that they let you have when you make the offer is usually the runt and you have nothing but issues later on

If you are buying from a proper breeder, assuming it's a pedigree you're buying then they should assess you as an owner and be open to an offer.

If it's from a farm then you'll be buying a dog that is also its mother's sister/brother/uncle/aunt.

Have you researched the typical market price for the breed you are getting?

I don't think it is normal practice but I think you could ask if there is any flexibility in the price.

That could explain the problems we had with our dog all those years ago.

having sold 3 litters of puppies this year ( i have 10 dogs all used for my job) i had so many people wanting to buy them i could have sold them all 3 times over. I will not haggle on price its take it or leave it. If the dogs have a good pedigree then the price should reflect that.
all that said good luck and hope you enjoy your new puppie

Dog bought today with no discount. Its an English Mastiff, only 4 weeks old so should get her in another 4 weeks.
They have people travelling from all over the UK to view them so they are confident all will go therefore no discount.

Its a deal, you are the buyer, why shouldn't you make an offer for the one that you personally like out of the litter?

We walked away as Rambo was a little small and pathetic when we first saw him and I thought the kids would squash him, last of the litter, we walked away and I got the evil eye off the wife and kids, plus being a big softy I knew I would worry about his plight, all alone in a manky stable so I went back and offered the woman half the £200 she was asking, she took £140, so pretty good discount, she didnt know I was going to pay the £200 or whatever

Be prepared to walk away, play hard ball as you can always offer more, it doesnt work the other way round, depends on a lot of factors whether the offer works, oh and take cash, it opens many doors !

Rambo turned into a decent (still small) sized Dog (Yorkie Poo) and is an absolute Star, house trained, plays well, content, funny, loving and easy to live with, was worried he would look a bit effete, ok he is only Jack Russell sized but he just looks scruffy and is a good terrier shape, but with poncy Poodle feet, Gnasher out of the Beano is the best comparison

my wife has just paid £400 for a shi-poo which is a designer mongrel ****zu/toy poodle cross.the breeder wouldnt move on the price,in between the time we paid a deposit and collected her,the breeder said that she could have sold her 6 times over as she was the only black one in a litter of 8,all the others were sold.when she collected poppy my wife conunted around 50 pups of various breeds including crosses, at £400 a pop thats serious business.

we got the dog from here.it seemed like a decent place.....

Its not a bad earner. English Mastiffs are circa £1200 a pup. A decent litter of 10 say, less stud fees and other expenses makes for a nice little earner. If all buyers pay cash then what the tax man dont know

I got my dog through Spoon, who posts on here now and then. The breeder was asking a stupid price and he negotiated for me and got a fair wedge off.
He's a fabulous dog, wouldn't be without him
