That Was Unexpected
Labours landslide victory in Glasgow North East.
They thumped the SNP, their closest rivals for the seat.
The Tories weren't expected to win - but they only beat the BNP by 62 votes and barely held onto their deposit!
Labour are far from dead it would appear. People (generally) aren't stupid and realise that they did what they had to do to get the country through the economic crisis.
I suspect that the Tories will not get a clear run at the next election, they should be so far ahead that they would wipe the floor - but they are not ...... they need to explain to the voters why they called every step of the economic downturn wrong - whilst Labour got every decision right.
Hung Parliment next June?

Not a surprise in the slightest. Glasgow North East has always been Labour.
You could maybe do research the next time before you troll?

The thumping of the opposition is the surprise, for a party under seige - don't you think?
You could maybe do research the next time before you accuse someone of trolling?

What was the turnout?
An area made up of people (probably) heavily dependent on benefits voting for the party that advocates paying benefits, and the keeping the non-working not working.
Spooky.

"The 33.02% turnout was the lowest in Scottish byelection history, but Labour's 8,111-vote majority was still significant given that it was a November byelection – less than six months before the general election.
The result is the SNP's worst byelection performance in a straight contest against Labour since 1978, when George Robertson extended the Labour majority in the Hamilton byelection against the SNP's Margo MacDonald.
The British National party had its best byelection showing in Scotland by coming fourth with 1,013 votes.
The BNP lost its deposit by just 20 votes, narrowly failing to beat the Tories. The party's 4.9% share of the vote was 0.5% higher than it won at the European election, but one-third higher than at the 2005 general election"

I just find it amazing that a Government in the worst economic crisis the world has ever known can still get thumping by-election victories like this. I can only put it down to the fact that the voters are much smarter in this day and age - they will look at what was done and vote accordingly. They will also give a bloody nose to any party who has consistently got every decsion wrong ... and those who voted against policies which have clearly worked throughout the world.

If you are saying that the Tories will look after the rich and stuff the poor - you are quite correct in your edit ....... but, I'm sure you can write your own words?

What a perverse mind you have.

They need the tax breaks they thrive on, yes. If you think that a pair of Eton boys are going to look after state schools, the NHS and the pensioners you are deluding yourself.

Just for once I find I have to agree Pete, It was a strong Labour constituency already of course but I think that Cameron by joining the betrayal of this country by saying that he will not give us a referendum on the Lisbon constitution has shot himself in the foot and that this will show again in the future as far as his popularity is concerned.
We will see how well the decisions went when it becomes clear just how much we are in debt and what the interest costs will be for all those years to come! It would have been so much better if they had not pissed the money against the wall in those earlier times.
And there was me hoping for the excuse of a great political rant when you returned!
By the way, doubtless because of the self appointed English language expert while you were away, who corrects our use of the language at every step, it looks as though it has now caught on and everyone is trying it!

It is like a leech helping out it's host by having a day off sucking blood.
At least the Eton boys parents helped out the state by paying for their childrens education.
And surprise surprise, having shown a little self reliance in prioritising their childrens education - they seem to have gotten somewhere in life.
