Yeah, I agree they are cute. Last time I saw some we were outside the London Transport Museum! A bloke was outside waiting for someone and had 2 on leads! Very sociable. Only thing that would put me off is that they smell! Don't know if this can be avoided...

I'm told the males are the more smellier of the species but if you have them neutered it reduces it greatly.
I'm also told it is wise to get the females spade, they are slightly unusual creatures whereby once a female goes into season she won't come out of it until mated. Okay in the wild, but in captivity if they don't get mated and brought out of season there is a good chance the female will die If not spade you need a vasectomised male to service them (that or have some baby ferrets!).
Imagine that girls, you had to have sex every time you ovulated or you die

A friend of my Dad had Ferrets when I was a child and I used to play with them. They are great little things. Although if they bite, you will know it and they have a tendancy to not let go...

I have had them in the past and yes what you have been told is correct.
They need loads of attention everyday they aren't an animal you can just keep locked up then expect it to be friendly when you do want to play.
First one we had was brilliant and as we only had one was our best friend and only nipped you when really raving around and didn't smell much at all.
The we got a pair and they egg each other on and didn't need as much company with us they smelled a bit more and nipped more too.
None of them ever bit hard (apart from been very young not knowing any better)

A girl at work has them, the demands on your time are comparable to a Dog rather than things like Hamsters, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs etc, they are very engaging fun creatures but their inquisitive streak can be their undoing, you have to "Ferret-Proof" your house, any hole, any cranny they will be in there, they are escapologists and if they get out they cannot survive very long, they tend to pinch things and hide them, gnaw stuff, pull stuff over, like a toddler but they dont grow out of it, they do play nip but if they do bite it is very painful but generally they do know to not hurt you, its just if they get you by mistake when playing.

My niece who's 10 has a couple. Ive just uploaded a bit of video I took of some babies they had back in June this year.
They are quite fun but they do smell and the Male is a bugger for playing a bit rough. When he nips he doesn't want to let go.

We have 8 of them in a big run in the garden.never been bitten by them as all hand reared by me and the misses.when i go into the run to clean or feed them the attention i get is unbelivable they just want to play and play so much fun.the first two we kept in the house but they were little devils just tarearseing around the place like they were on speed.now the only time they come in is when they have there nails clipped and bathed just let them go mental in the kitchen for a while.
dont just get one as the do like to be with others.
