From February 17th 2002, the only place still taking French Francs (and changing them to Euros) is the Banque de France which can be found in major cities in France.
Since the above mentioned date, the French Franc is no longer legal tender (anywhere in the world), but coins can be exchanged until the end of June 2002 and notes until the end of June 2012 at the above-mentioned Banque de France.
If you only have between 100 and 500 FRF, just keep them for souvenir or take them with you the next time you go to France. Keep coins for souvenir or something.

Thanks for the answer(s).
At lunchtime I called Barclays. It looks like they are going to start accepting francs again(not sure about other currencies though). They told me that they would store all the money received in an account and it would take a couple of weeks for the conversion to take place. The sterling would then be paid into the my own account that I have with them.
I wonder if this means that they are going to put all of their customers francs into the one 'dummy' account. This money is then presented to the Bank of France for conversion into sterling. Hence the 1-2 weeks delay in the process.
Anyway, at the moment it looks like I'll still be able to convert my francs without catching a ferry - fingers crossed.
