Default Should cat d cars show up on the log book?

I am looking at a 2003 car, seems okay but I did a text check and it is showing up as cat d. The log book says nothing

No, only cat c's do because they have undertaken a mandatory VIC (Vehicle Identity Check) after repair.

I've seen some Cat D's worse damaged than a Cat C. Its a fairly corrupt business from what I've seen. I work in insurance and 4 out of my last 5 cars have been bought as damaged. Sometimes, they change the category depending on what the pay out is to the insured.

I have to agree its a very (no pun intended) hit and miss affair.
Walking through salvage yards it can be a mystery at times what caused a car to be written off.

On a recent trip there was one, light damage, front end.... Apparently due to the recession parts are a nightmare to source, therefore it was written off, rather than waiting 2 months for parts.

I have had a few C's and D's now. Current is a C. Last one was a D, got it sorted, back on the road, sold to a mate, he went to tax it, reclassified as a C, and had to VIC it ! WTF !! I agree, its a nightmare.

My only rule of buying insurance write offs, is seeing them BEFORE the repairs. Some of the stuff my mate has bought and repaired, I would be horrified to know what I had bought AFTER paying lol.
Not that they are unsafe, but I would rather know the full extent of the damage, and decide how the repairs are done. Rather than seeing "former cat D, fully repaired to industry standard" in the Autotrader

lol and the rest.

Being the lowest write of Cat then yeah I agree vandal damage, and minor stuff falls under a D, but you can get D's needing bonnet, bumper, wings, grill, rad etc too.

Like Joey says, its almost corrupt the way it works.

at those pictures, the car is for the missus and is owned by an old lady. So unless she is a dodgy dealer i reckon someone has done one on her

Cheers for the info

I had a cat d which looked fine but it turned out it had a kink in the chassis which may have been a week point in an accident allowing the car to fold in on itself,Only found this out after lifting the carpet .
Personally i would never buy a written off car again.

Dont take those pics at standard mate. That was just to show that it CAN be more that a repainted bumper.
In a lot of cases, especially depending on the age of the car, the damage is far less.
Send me the reg if you want.

Sometimes a good indicator is the time between accident and getting a new owner. Othertimes, a once over from an expert is a good idea

My current one is a cat c.
It does not bother me at all as its worth **** all anyway drives nice mind!

To be honest as far as my beady eye can tell, its had a light front corner knock, but with it being a MG Rover and this happening just after they went bust, the majority of them were written off for pretty much everything!

Even the 05/06 MG ZS180 cars will be written off now if the wheel arch trim is damaged, as they cant get replacements

Makes for good bargains if you are handy with the tub of fibreglass.

Randomly i have just seen this picture on a forum, it seams even the new chinese owners could not display the car (now supposedly called an MG5) with the arch trim fitted

Written off before its even put on the road

Ive seen slaughtered cars for repair and cars barely worthy of 'D' classification with destruction orders on.

I own a car that needed a bumper and a panel repair which has been classified as a 'C'. It was going to be a 'D' until the owner dug his heels in for retention and a decent settlement.....

You'll know what I mean if you see cars at salvage with loads of white circles on them. When the owner wants it written off, and they do whatever they have to to the assesor, money, sexual favours, lol, etc. They go around the whole car, and mark every small dent, scratch or chip. Then suddenly the car costs a lot more to repair.
