Why is a logbook called a logbook?
Surely calling a V5 a logbook is anachronistic beyond measure?
I am old and I have no recollection of 'logbooks' ever being a book!

It's just the vernacular. Like calling all vacuum cleaners a Hoover. Its name is the V5 document, isn't it?

They were a small book when I started driving ..... with every single owner listed - in their own handwriting - those were the days.

Surely a throwback to the old 'ships-log'?

But to me it is a bit like calling a USB Drive a Floppy Disk.
Just because they have an analogous role, one cannot ignore the significant change in form, if not function.

A USB drive is nothing like a floppy disk. You mean a floppy disk versus a 'floppy' disk

As some one already said it was a small book which logged all the owners.

It is as Pete says. It is the deed of ownership of the vehicle and originally it held a complete list of the car's owners. This is how the name of "log" book came about in the first place. It was actually a folded card with all the relevant information included on it. Possession of that was always proof of the car's ownership unless it could be proved othrwise.

We have vehicle log books in our work cars - but they are for recording who was driving, how far, fuel or oil added and a signature (in case you are caught speeding).
In previous employment the same document was known as a vehicle works ticket.
