That has to be one f*ing powerful projector! Which I doubt as the light is brighter in the sky than it is on the supposed ground/source.

I can't give it up, the truth is out there. Show me a laser projector could create something of that size and brightness on a clear night sky.

No projector involved, and a projector that could illuminate a clear sky over many hundreds of miles would be a bit obvious.
Simple answer - a rocket launch that went wrong. The booster tumbled and leaked fuel in a spiral. At that altitude it was in sunlight even though at ground level it was dark.
The leaking fuel would carry on with no air resistance and make the pretty patterns. When the fuel ran out there would be a 'hole' in the pattern which would appear to grow as the fuel moved away.
(oops - I see that what would scooby do provided the information already.... must read threads properly ! I guess it will still be classed as a UFO or something by most people...)

The explanation of a failed missile launch followed by a self destruct is certainly the most feasible explanation. I have seen videos of self destructing missiles, either accidental or intended, which looked similar.
