Question Does Afghanistan have any oil reserves?

If yes then why is their Premier saying that he can't pay to train up his people for the next 15 years?

Do you think that might have something to do with the fact that what little infrastructure the country had has been bombed back to the stone age ?

Come on guys let’s get real shall we.

We didn’t go into Afghanistan for oil or gas we went in because of 9-11 and to suggest otherwise is to ignore the facts.

The conflict in Afghanistan has cost NATO countries $100’s Billions and will cost more and more over the next few years. There’d have to be one hell of an oil/gas upside to make that expenditure payback not to mention the loss of life.

I am very real, thank you.

My post had no hint of a hidden oil agenda although, of course, this would have been a factor. If only Zimbabwe had had some oil

But I am sick and tired of my tax being used to pay for a questionable war overseas which is killing decent British citizens. I also heard a whisper that UK was a bit short of readies at the moment.

And then I heard that Karzai expected the West to pay a lot more towards training his troops and I thought that may be he should dip his hand in his own pocket if possible. Hence my question.

The cost to the countries involved is not really a factor if the politicians are motivated more by the big business who benefit from war, than by what is good for their own nation.
While Afganistan is still open for debate there is no doubt that the Iraq invasion was money and oil motivated.

Oh you obviously feel I was having a pop, in which case I apologise, my choice of words obviously carried more intent than was meant.

Don't get me started on Karzai

i did not mean to suggest the reason we went into Iraq was because of Oil

but historically there has been attempts to control the distribution of oil from the Caspian sea region of southern Russia

and a possible route for this is thru Afganistan

What the president is saying is that if NATO/EEC/UN don't give me loads of money, then I (we?) can't afford to train/run our soldiers in order to keep a lid on the Taliban/AQ, in which case they will escape into the wider world and bomb your citizens.
