OLDHAM - cheapest place to buy property!
"According to recent research,* Oldham is officially the most affordable place to snap up aproperty.
The research looked at average house prices and average mortgage rates for first-time buyers with a 25% deposit, and Oldham was easily the best bet, with an average monthly mortgage cost of £353 a month, compared to the average first-time buyer mortgage of £464 a month.
Other areas in the North West also performed well, including Salford (£374), Manchester (£375) and Bolton (£379).
No prizes for guessing the most expensive area for first-time buyers either: London, with an average monthly mortgage cost of £1,240"
"The immediate response for many when seeing the results will be to turn straight to the North/South divide. Houses are always cheaper in the North than they are in the South, just as wages and the cost of living are also lower, right?
That's all a bit simplistic though, as the research itself establishes. Salford and Manchester may be particularly affordable for example, but travel a few miles down the road to Trafford and watch your repayments rocket up to £694.
That's a distance of just over three miles - a fifteen minute drive at the most - and yet your mortgage repayments are double, every month"

Even within Salford I bet there's a huge difference in costs between the still-to experience-urban-regeneration parts of Ordsall and The Quays, despite being pretty much across the road from each other.

It is amazing how different the country has become with stuff like this, I would kill for a mortgage of £694 a month, but I elect to live where I live, I often think that us down here in the south are a bit simple for paying so much to live.
By the looks of it I have a typical London mortgage and I dont know if I get that many benefits for all that money.
The biggest pity IMO is that coastal living is so expensive, or the wages are so provincial it makes it hard to live there. The home counties are a bit overrated to be honest.

The reason its cheap is because its shiete. I drove through there today on the way to rochdale (which isnt any better) and its a crap hole. They'd have to pay me to live there!

sorry but its an awful place. You really wouldn't park your car up there, or want to send your children to school.
properties in places like that, are not investment opportunities. you'll be lucky to rent them on to anyway but smackheads/DSS.

I used to work in a couple of car dealerships in Oldham...
The place is a sh!tehole....
I wouldnt live there if my mortgage was a quid a week..
The whole area has been ruined with the influx of immigrants that have settled there.
Used to also do the doors at the odd pub and club in the centre. Its like the wild west at the weekend!!

think its a bit out of order how u have totally slagged where i live off - wouldnt dare to be so damn right nasty to others. nothing wrong with parking my car where i am, never had any problems at all and there is absolutely nothin wrong with the schools my eldest daughter(14 yr old) has just been chosen to sit her gcse's a year early and been accepted on a diploma course so her education hasnt been affected by living in such a "Slum" as you lot seem to think it is - dam snobs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

totally agree and I live in Bradford. no better than oldham.
has the 2nd highest rate of empty shops now and the 2nd highest rate of uninsured drivers, fake accident motor claim rate.
it is a much bigger area than oldham though- with some extremely expensive areas/villages out of the city centre. just a shame the city is fooked. I'd never dream of bothering to come in for a night out, meal etc.

Umm a bit of generalisation going on ,i thinks .As with anywhere in the country you get good and bad areas within a ***** Stride of each other .
Dobcross ,Diggle ,etc etc has some fantastic property with splendid views ,yet only minutes from Oldham town centre for shopping etc .
Each to there own ,I suppose ,but I would rather pay £200 k for a detached 4 bedder ,than £350 k for a part of a house!! (flat ) with no parkin spot down sarf .
You makes your own choices I guess .

Dobcross,Diggle,Denshaw and Uppermill are a million miles away from Oldham (Not geographically)..
All are really nice places..
Its places like Abbey hills,Glodwick, slattocks,Derker and Greenacres that are rough..Streets and houses are scruffy and full of crap, scrap Nissans and toyota's are on every street corner..
Its a shame...

i'm a Manc living in Cornwall
Wages are lower here than Manchester, without a doubt
Oldham isn't the nicest of places but you can get your car nicked pretty much anywhere nowadays
there are different areas to Oldham - Derker (the bronx) and Saddlewoth (footballers)
Derker, cheap as chips, most are council and Saddleworth are quite expensive, especially compared to Cornwall
i'd rather spend 200k on a terraced house in Cornwall than a detached one Oldham (or Saddleworth)
