Sad and i can't believe they have unprotected structural columns so close to the track leaving no margin for error.

Shocking news before it has even opened. It underlines the real danger of these sports for the inexperienced.

Indeed, very tragic. The risk is why they do it, its 1 hell of an adrenaline rush.

I asked a friend why she raced bobs, to get the above answer. This is after she showed of her bruises from a crash on facebook. No joke 80% of her body was purple, I have walked away from car crashes with a lot less.

the video is online on abc news website, im surprised how they were not padded even then they are still too close,

why arent these things made fully covered like a tube with little cameras put inside them, its the rapid deceleration thats done harm here.

anyway for those that wanted to see it its here,

Sickening stop, I'd have thought that was it... neck broken, doesn't take a genius to work out the potential for harm at that section - which begs the question why they allowed it?

That video is a confirmation of the speed that they achieve, impressively fast alright.

I think the authorities should be severely hammered for not bothering to insulate those pillars or to instal some kind of catch fencing to stop the competitor from hitting them.

after seeing this it was my immediate thought too. crazy. all sports come with an element of risk, but you would expect the organisers to at least minimise it

That is an incredibly badly designed track! Come out of it at any point (which is entirely possible given the speeds they are running) and its a complete horror show! Even the Cresta Run has a better layout than that.

The only saving grace is it would have been quick if not an instant death, but it could have been averted or even avoided if all that metal wasnt there.

The designer of that track should hang is head in shame. Udo Gurgel of IBG, I'm looking at you!

That is absolutely appalling. Just a protective mesh alongside the track would at least have given the poor guy a chance.

IOC should stop this event immediately until safety is improved.

Horrific, and a total shame it will take a death for people to look at the safety of these tracks.

Apparently they have now put up a catch fence to stop anyone coming off the top and also lowered the start line to the womens' one which will slow them down quite a bit.
