Default What will happen to Shamu now?

Well one of the Shamu's anyway.

Following the death at Seaworld last night, will it be destroyed I wonder.
A huge part of me hopes not, but reality suggests it will be.

Natural behaviour, anger, playing?
Just waiting on the story to settle out a bit before having a proper opinion on it.

Real Sad what happened, i guess the whale will be got as ready as is possible for life back in the ocean and released - best thing IMHO.

Oops just noticed, its the 3rd person he has been "involved" in their death (2nd is a bit shady)
Release would be nice, but Orca's are not known for making the change too well, and would probably be considered an act of cruelty in itself.

Sounds like a horrific thing to watch, but interesting in a morbid way.

Yes - its been involved in killing a humam before

I've watched the performance at sea world myself - the animals themselves must be bored stupid.
They're sick quite a lot presumably from the amount of "treats" they're fed for doing the tricks.

Release to the wild - won't work, it would be kinder to shoot the thing.
Can you get a muzzle for a killer whale?

At the end of the day it is an animal who know how they will react at any time and what makes them react in any given way.

Maybe it was just fed up with splashing water over people.

Aren't they actually a type of dolphin?

If you play with big wild animals you really have to ask why people are surprised that they can kill.

Sky website has some dodgy stories - the Oprah interview of the woman that had her face ripped off and her hands bitten off by a "pet" chimp. Some dude thinking breaking into the bear enclosure is a good thing. Odd stories.

It's a dangerous animal FFS, it kills things in the wild so therefore risky keeping it in captivity. Same goes for lions, tigers, etc. in zoos. It should not be destroyed for displaying its natural behaviour.

Agreed it would be a shame to see it be destroyed. However in the selfish world we live in, if its not paying for its keep, no one will want it there.

I watched the actual documentary.

Several stories were covered including that one with the woman getting her face ripped off

There were gruesome others too.

I think people don't actualy realise just how strong a chimp is when its fully grown.

OK - love cute wee baby money - stick a nappy and some clothes on it just for further humiliation and enjoy it while you can.
Because in less than 12 months it'll be capable of ripping your ******* arm clean off in revenge

As to the killer whale, well I guess the clue is in his name.

Will probably not be the first time this has happened, nor the last.

I was told once by an expert that a killer whale is an animal which has an inbuilt instinct which is such that it can never be trusted when anyone is around it.

There is no way the creature can be blamed for the terrible death of the woman and also what has happened before. It was following its natural feelings. They are lovely looking animals and it is not surprising that they are used in shows like that.

I sincerely hope that they can return the whale to its natural place and that it can cope with life in the wild now.

Its tragic of course but ther eis always the potential there, the clue is in the name "Killer Whale", if they were called "Cuddlefish" you could feel a bit suprised at what happened, its huge, has loads of teeth and rips things approxmately woman in a wetsuit size apart for lunch when in the wild.

As for chimps, the evil, tea swilling, banana noshing, nought and crosses playing thugs of the jungle, as long as they are happy you can dress them up in Dungarees and make them look like a Chimp but p1ss one of you realise that the little cute Monkey is a lot stronger than the average bloke, even big strong blokes like weighlifters due to bone density, muscle type, structure and the fact they just do it, they dont think about it, humans it is said dont use all the strength they can bring to bear unless a situation calls for it, fight or flight kicks in, a bit like the Spitfires in WW2 that had a maximum boost setting that allowed escape at the expense of a fooked engine. Nearest evolutionary point in between Humans and Chimps is the average white van driver.

I mean what the heck are people thinking when they have to learn self defence just to look after a pet???

Makes me feel better about having a cat that thinks vomitting at the bottom of the stairs is its way of saying "cheers for the bed and board son"

But did it tear the woman apart in a feeding frenzy, or playfully grab her around the waist and swim round the pool underwater a couple of times for fun. Completely different scenarios in my book. 'Attack' might be overstating the actual events.

It's a shame for the poor creature, it is kept in a 'water cage' and fed bits of crappy food, so it will get fed up after a while.

Maybe it killed intentionally, maybe it was an accident. At the end of the day, large sea creatures should be in the sea, and not in an over sized fish tank.

Like has been said several times it's a killer whale, so it's not that much of a shock.

I bet you would rather see that than them jumping out of the water. As it happens the trainer drowned so looks like it was trying to be more playfull than her lungs could cope

Apparently it was seen to be thrashing about a little too, so its not too certain it was just playing. That said, YouTube has a shocking number of videos of the whales taking their trainers under water for extended periods of time.
And the video of it catching the pelican, then they all start ignoring the trainers shows how they can decide what they are doing if they want.
