Last year we submitted my wife's tax form online for the first time. Not knowing any better, we didn't worry when we never got an acknowledgement e-mail
WRONG!
So, of course, they write to her and tell her she's been fined £100 for not submitting on time.
Now we knew the result of the submission, which was they THEY owed US £75, and we also know that you can't be fined if they owe you money.
So she rings them up and tells them, and is told they never received our submission, and we need to put it in writing. This we do, but they just write back and ask for £100 plus interest, please![Mad](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/mad.gif)
This went on all year. At approximately 6 weeks intervals.![Mad](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/mad.gif)
Eventually we do THIS year's tax form. And lo and behold, there is LAST years tax form still on the system. So we submit both
In the post today, notification that they will refund us £180, and will no longer send out requests for her to fill in a tax form.
Result?
Well, yes, except that if they owe us an average of £90 per year, THAT situation is liklely to continue, so if we DON'T submit a return, how do we get it back?![Confused](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/confused.gif)
So maybe not such a result after all.

They send it back to you by cheque normally, you can still submit a return if you want to. I always over pay National Insurance and corporation tax and a cheque arrives a few months later for the difference.

HMRC owed me some money due to overpayment of death dutys
After 12months they eventually refunded, sans interest. Knowing they'd charge interest if it was the other way round, and being quite cheeky, I sent a letter and phoned them asking for interest owed....and I got it!
It wasn't much, but it was the principal.

Now make your mind up: it can't have been the principal AND the interest? LOL ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Hers tends to be that she pays a stamp on her main earnings, and another, erroneously, on her secondary earnings. It's that we want back, but we'll have to claim it each year I think.

pretty sure you can still submit tax returns, even though they don't require you to. and do it in early Summer - i.e. if they owe you money, do it asap, why wait until early the following year?

Possibly had wrong tax codes, it's happened to my wife many times and every year she owes the buggers more tax even though she's PAYE and sends a self assessment form every year.
